  • Mine is actually plugged directly into the computer.

  • pberberich, on a macPro the USB bus should be safe ... if nothing else is in the game.

do you by chance run any audio or video device also over USB? it might take all the available bandwidth from time to time ...

  • currently I am using a firewire interface ( apogee ensemble) and a usb midi controler other than the vienna key off course.

  • I have been in contact with syncrosoft customer support. After they had tried to trouble shoot with me that say that it is most likely a broken or defective key and to contact vienna instruments for a replacement key. I have contacted them via email. Now it is just waiting to hear back.

  • I just went out and purchsed a powered usb hub. So far so good . This might have solved the problem.

  • thanks for reporting back - since you mentioned you have the key directly on the macPro i didn't include this above.

but of course it can also happen, that currency on the USB bus is not sufficient, especially if another powerhungry device is connected.

usually that's what specifications are for (max 500 mA on a USB 2.0 channel in total), but unfortunately often manufacturers don't care ...

the ViennaKey doesn't need much power, but is sensitive regarding proper currency

  • I've never gotten any help from Syncrosoft customer support whatsoever. Because their software is among the slowest in the world, considering what it does, I would sooner *doubt* that the key is defective. When instantiating anything using Syncrosoft, be it VSL or some other software, the wait time for an empty instance is no less than 2-3 minutes on my MacPro 3G-- and 4 minutes is not uncommon. If a dongle misread occurs, troubleshooting can take an hour or more. Since the days of VSL Standard Edition, I've found Syncrosoft to be quite sub par, and it's such a bitter irony to have to rely upon it to use the very best Virtual Instrument ever created!

  • I wish VIenna instruments used other forms of protection as well. It seems like a lot of people use ilok. How are they ?

  • I have no problem with Syncrosoft on any of my six machines. However, I don't use Macs, and right from the start it seems to have caused more problems on Macs.

FWIW iLok has often caused huge problems for PC users, so I don't think that either one is best for both groups of people. Currently I don't have problems with iLok either though. [:D]

  • So far so good. I think the powered Hub is helping. I will give it a few weeks and give you the final word.
