I started this thread just before but I am moving it in a new one since it is getting interesting... I was wondering how film composers ususally work when it comes to writing a score and orchestrating... In other threads some people told there liked to write 1st a complete piano cue to see if it suited in the movie, others orchestrate directly, others write everything in pencil, etc... In the previous orchestrating thread, someone pointed out that people like Williams could first write everything on paper then handle this to an orchestrator... I am wondering how this works actually... Is the first instance of writing a 4 parts writing? (Or in case someone composes on a piano, a 2 clef writing and let's say, 4 voices conducting, which would lead then to voice duplicating and so during orchestration), is it a combination of all this or what do you think is the best technique?
For example, let's say I am writing in 4 parts, there's some chords I am using because it gives a tonal identity and the ambience needed, some counterpoint and a second voice, but as film scoring is not written in any specific form, like a sonata, I don't have to rely solely on classical techniques, and in a lot of moments, the underscore is just made of ambient, 2 or 3 bassoon notes, a percussive element and an almost ad-libitum tempo or conducting, so how do this comes out from raw pencil?
Hehe, I hope I will not drive people mad with this thread, I am so curious and willing to know ( I am still studying music)...
Regards,
Ivan.
