I wondered if I could make a few design suggestions for the Vienna Ensemble interface.
Although I'm loving what it's capable of doing, I think there are a few areas where it could perhaps be improved, particularly the way in which the GUI behaves, and the information displayed in the mixer. Please feel free to chime in if anyone disagrees or has other ideas.
1. Show Loaded Matrix in Mixer Channel
At the moment, the mixer gives no information whatsoever on what matrix/instrument is loaded on each channel, or even if an instrument is active on a channel or not. It would be hugely helpful if, when the user loaded an instrument or matrix, this information was displayed on the mixer channel - perhaps below the channel number (at the top) and above 'Effects'. This would mean that the mixer would display an entire arrangement's basic information, without any individual channels having to be 'opened'.
2. Follow Left Hand Column Selection when displaying Instruments
I have a feeling this may be a GUI bug. When I click on a channel in the left hand column (which stacks the mixer channels vertically), the right hand window shows the loaded instrument interface. However, when I then click the next channel down, the interface loaded in the right hand window does not change, meaning I have one channel selected in the left hand window, and a different instrument displayed in the right hand window. I can't help feeling this is a recipe for confusion. Like I say, perhaps it's just a bug with the current build.
3. Select Channel Colours
Maybe it's just my eyesight, but I find the similarity in colours against such a dark background a little difficult for quick navigation. If there was any way that the user could tag channels with a selection of brighter colours, it might help the labelling process, and render very big mixers easier to navigate around.
Just a few ideas.
