  • Cubase 4, Vienna Instruments hogging resources? Baffled!

    pentium quad
    win xp pro
    4gb memory
    delta 66

I'm thinking its a cubase problem or it has something to do with the vienna instruments. Any ideas would be VERY welcome INDEED, cos apart from that and the VERY occasional loadup error I'm enjoying trouble-free music making...I know! Unheard of! Surprised)

    Many thanks!

    Fizzy

  • Hi Fizzy,

my guess is that you may have loaded a little bit too many samples...

How much RAM do you have, how much RAM did you use?

What happens if you unload 2 or Vienna Instruments and then reload the song?

    Great to see your enthusiasm!

    Best,

  •  Thanks Paul!

I checked on the Vienna Instruments and it says I have over a gig left (woo hoo!) but I guess that means memory isn't the problem. I've had this before after only having about 5 tracks of vienna instruments open. I'm totally stumped.

I have a work around..I save the project under another name...delete everything expect the Halion track, reload Halion and export a wav file...import into original as an audio track. It seems to work...just have to remember to take off master effects before export otherwise it will be wetter than a fishes wet bits!

    The search goes on...

    Thanks again!

  • What does Task Manager say about the amount of memory used?

    DG

  • I opened the project then task manager: Total memory just over 3gb, free memory just over 1gb, used memory is the offset between the two.

I don't think its memory because I've had about 3 or 4 vienna instruments open and it cubase 4 hasn't opened the Edirol Orchestral Instrument before...I could be wrong..in a way I hope I am!

On this project though I can't open halion1 or Edirol Orch. I can't open any of the other free synths with Cubase 4 either.....I CAN open superwave and more vienna instruments though...If I start a new project then I can open what I want.

There's an update for cubase 4 but people have had problems and this is minor compared to other bugs I've read on the forum (cubase just not working etc.)  So don't really wanna go there just yet.

Will have to see if anyone posts something on the Cubase forum...I left an identical post there so maybe someone knows whats going on. I can't help but think its a cubase problem as someone else has experienced similar problems with an NI instrument...no one posted a solution unfortunately.

    Thanks,

    Fizzy

    HI Fizzy,

3 GB RAM is the OS limited maximum in Win XP. I guess that´s the reason for this behaviour.

    Now with Vista64....

  • One more question. Have you set the /3Gig switch?

    DG

  • Offbeat question. Could this be the "sids" thing that happens in some programs where the VSTi "dies" after so many hours of non-use requiring the entire system has to be relaunched? This is a very common with V-Stack and also one I run into with Logic, depending on the OS 10 version being used.

  • Hi guys,

the 3gb switch is active....i ordered this pc from the states and its specifically tweaked and sold for music production.

also i've tried restarting the PC and reloading...the halion 1remains dead as well as all the other free cubase synths....superwave works fine though...the plot thickens?

i still have 1gb of memory left and can load up more vienna instruments (i've got 20 vienna instrument tracks so far and used up just over half my available memory for samples....i'm quite impressed actually :D

Processors not breaking a sweat and the memory is only half used up (thats FREE memory!)

If i can find what all the free cubase 4 instruments and edirol orchestral have in common then that might help but still totally stumped.

    Thanks!!
