    still no progress...

    I created a new multi, attached the cable to the VE, set midi to all, but now I'm stuck with the channel settings in the VE window...

    sorry, but I need more help

    As an addition to my post above, it works for me as a standalone but not in Logic.

    Hello Denis,

    I understand that the custom data folder is only for saving data of instruments that were used in a certain project, like special custom made presets of a saxophone quartet for instance. 

    In the case that I did not save anything much yet into this custom data folder, this is still an nearly empty folder.

    It does not make a difference anyway, the directory manager does not seem to do much of a job when 'rescanning existing', it is finished in half a second. I have the feeling it does not do anything.

    Hi I made it work by having 4 external VE's one for each section of the orchestra, I created an aggregate device with my MOTU interface and soundflower 16 channel. Then I turn IAC on and created 4 ports each called strings, percussion, woodwind and brass. Then I opened 4 VE's and set their ports to each of these and set their master outs to different stereo tracks in sound flower. Then in logic I set my audio device to the aggregate device, created 4 aux tracks and set their input to each of the strings, brass, perccusion, woodwind. And then created midi tracks that used each of the IAC ports for strings ect and had multiple midi channels oneach port for each instrument. This means I have Logic running with Midi channels and 4 Auxs to mix each section and I have 4 VE's running one for each section and each can access 2.8GB of RAM with no ram being taken away from Logic. It runs great!!

    Hello Simsy,

    It sounds very ingenious and complicated, but in the end, it looks like you do not use VE as a plug-in, is that right? It looks like you use 4 stand-alone VE's and port them to logic.

    I want to know how to use VE as a plug-in in Logic, and first of all I want to see the blue window in logic. So far that did not even work.

    Hi Chris, ok I try to explain step by step: 1 go in enviroment page and select audio in the box on the left- 2 on "new" menu' create a multi instrument- 3 connect the multi instrument to the inst. 1 fader- 4 push on every midi channel (1 to 10 now are selected)- 5 return in arrange and set the midi channel of audio instrument 1 on "all" 5 then create the other 15 traks called "multi instrument (2 to 16) 6 in your audio instrument 1 now you can open your VE with 16 VI don't forget to assign the right midi channel for every VI- 7 now you can play.....     Thanks very much for your help. However, I am simply not clear as to what exactly you mean. For example you suggest "connecting" a Multi Instrument created in Logic's Environment to an instance of Vienna Ensemble. How exactly does one do this? Where is Vienna Ensemble in Logic's Environment? Do you mean to instantiate VE in an Audio Instrument and then wire that AI to the MIDI Multi Instrument? Please, if possible, give us more detailed instructions. In regard to VE's Directory Manager. I found that "Rescan Existing" did NOT work. When it did not, I removed all the library folders from the VE Directory Manager and then added them, one by one. After this VE "saw" the libraries.

    For those not familiar with the Environment (most Logic users aren't), how about a screen shot or two showing the MultiInstrument set up and how you're connecting it.

    That would be very useful for a lot of people.

     Yeah sounds like a good idea.

    I've tried setting up the Multi instrument in the audio enviroment and connecting it to an Audio instrument with ensemble plugged in. Couldn't get it too work either....Since gone down the standalone and soundflower midi/audio as suggested by Simsy. Works pretty well. Although is a bit complicated......

    Ensemble is excellant even for a Beta....thanks Vienna people...

    Are you guys talking about Logic 7? Because I haven't had to do any of what you guys are doing. I use L8 and it works fine... Tom

    To be honest I have VE working as a plugin in Logic 8, but I wanted to use the other way as it allows me 4 Ve's one for each section with their own 2.8GB of RAM and no RAM coming from Logic which leaves me room to run RMX, Atmosphere and effects plugins. Plus I have my 4 templates one for each section and once loaded I just minimize the 4 VE's to the dock and forget about them. I may not need to do this when I get leopard, but from being on the Logic 8 site people are saying that Logic is still 32bit apart from the exs and therefore the RAM restrictions still apply even on Leopard. So I will keep it this way until I move to leopard and they release a 64bit of Logic 8. I am just waiting until the dust settles!!

    Simsy...cool, I hadn't even thought about all that. So I have 6g ram. What would be the best thing? And how does one keep running more instances of this standalone, and finally, how does Logic see these standalones? I was under the impression that even though Logic could only access 3g or whatever, that VSL was still taking advantage of any RAM you had regardless of it's host.... I'm getting confused.. ;) Tom

    I tried to start Logic 8 (which I have but do not use yet) and I get the little window 'scanning for Audio Units' (finalized 0 of 1). At the bottom of that window I see 'Vienna Ensemble'. After a while the Vienna Ensemble Server window appears with no active instances.

    After another while a window appears that says: Unable to create Server Object. The Server application might be already running or the requested network port is not available. OK.

    So I am still stuck...

    I think that we're all still working through a few beta issues with the OSX version of Vienna Ensemble.  I'm sure the VSL guys will address some of these issues quickly and get a new build up soon, which will function more reliably.

    I spent a few hours trying to get it to work in Logic 7.2.3 yesterday, and spent a long time staring at spinning beachballs of death, both when intantiating the plugin of VE and then when trying to load matrices into the VE Instrument channels.  I did get it to work on one ocassion, but it's too hit and miss to be a workable proposition at the moment (IMHO).

    Just to perhaps clear up a few misconceptions, from what I managed to work out:

    1.  Vienna Ensemble CAN be run as a plugin (some people seem to think it's only a standalone application).  Just as with the Vienna Instruments plugin, when you intantiate VE in Logic, it launches a standalone server application, and instead of creating an individual interface for each instrument, creates a single Vienna Ensemble interface, in which you can then load a whole collection of instruments, route them flexibly, and insert plugins.  Midi is routed automatically from Logic to Vienna Ensemble, and audio is automatically routed back to Logic.

    2.  Setting up the MIDI side of things in Logic is exactly the same as for any other multitimbral virtual instrument.  Some people seem to be under the impression that special Environment gymnastics are required - they're not.  Just creat a 'Multi Instrument' in the Audio layer of the Environment, and cable it to the Audio Instrument channel which hosts the VE plugin. Then enable as many channels on the Multi Insutrment as you need (by clicking on the 16 buttons) and set the Audio Instrument with VE inserted on it to recieve MIDI on ALL channels.  Same procedure as for Stylus, Kontakt, Halion, BFD .... etc.  To play the instruments in Vienna Ensemble, in the Arrange Window you then select the Multi Instrument you created, NOT the Audio Instrument channel.  ie. if you named the Multi Instrument 'Vienna', that will appear in the 'Audio' sub-menu when you click on the track in the Arrange Window.

    I'm sure that makes it sound more complicated than it actually is.  To me, Vienna Ensemble seems pretty straight-forward and well thought out, and the issues stem more from application instability than from design shortcomings, and I'm sure these will be addressed as soon as VSL are able to do so.

    You are correct in that the very fist time you add a VE as a plugin it get's it's own RAM, butif you start adding any more then you start eating into the RAM of Logic as far as I can tell. In your case you have 6GB of RAM so you would be fine with it as a plugin as Logic will get 3GB and your instance of VE will get the rest, minus the RAM the OS takes. In my case I have loaded up my mac pro with 16GB so I can let the 4 VE's take 12 GB nearly and Logic have 3GB and that leaves 1GB for the OS. This works really well for me as I have loaded all the instruments and matrixes I want now and I am having no problems. I really love the VE!!!

    Is it just my imagination or do the sample sound slightly better running from inside the VE than as individual VI instrument plugins?
