  • Breathless realism!

At some point will there be a breath articulation on the solo woodwind instruments? I have often added in sampled breaths for that added realism.

Good idea. I'd also like to see (and hear) a few samples of actual audience hub-bub that occurs between movements and just before a performance starts. Add to that a few applauses at the end and cries of "Encore, encore" and we'd have the makings of an good, but artificial, 'live' performance. Second thoughts, that would be too gimmicky and probably just cheapen the whole library. Besides, you might catch a cold from all the coughs and sneezes! [[;)]]

However, I do think a few backround noise samples, that are long enough to cover whole movements, would improve the perception of realism enourmously.

Over on the Northern Sounds forum, Andy Blaney (username Andy B) commented on using this technique to make the sequences more realistic...

...I constructed an atmos track from the silence inbetween recordings which really helps to make it sound live...Can I just say that the atmos track, is simply that. It contains no performances at all. It's simply the orchestra sat there, trying to be quiet after/before a take, but obviously with 60 players in the hall, they\\'re going to make some sound between them. I wanted to make that clear as I think it would be unfair and possibly a breach of copyright for me to use their performances outside of the production they were paid to play on...

  • I actually thought of both of your ideas which is pretty cool. But where can I find a sample like that at?

  • I understand it's to give a realism effect but does the breath have an aesthetic purpose to the music, expression.... or is it just to fool people?

  • On string q-tet recordings this is very present.  Especially in slow movements where it seems they all breathe together when they start a phrase, etc.

I guess if done tastefully it could be musical, but for what I do it would be extraneous.

Slightly OT, it would be cool to have a jazz multiphonic flute perf option a la Dave Valentin! (singing into the flute stuff)

That would be a beast to program, though.

  • I could see it's usefullness for solo instruments in passages where a featured instrument is out on it's own and where realism may play a factor, but I think it wouldn't add much except to the overall noise floor to a large ensemble.
