  • ram ram ram, again...

hi there, ok...i did it...i joined the vi cake finally. for a start i purchased vi special edition + extension...and i don´t miss the exs times at all. great tool, i love it allready.... but, of course, it took me only two days to blow my 2gig of ram for the first time.... for some reasons i have to finish the actual job on a mac book... and as far as i know i can address 3 gigs of ram with a little trick, on that machine... but will the vi go along with this modification? it´s not that much more ram i need to configure a basic document i could work with... other threads upon this, gave me the impression that i can´t be sure, one gig more of ram means one gig of additional headroom to load and handle.... my host is logic pro 7.2 please let me know if it makes sense to push the mac books ram...next time i´ll get me a bigger machine, promise..... ...oh, and sorry, i got three user accounts now...password and net trouble these days....will kill two of them again next days... thanx for response... teloy

  • Well, there's no "trick" on a Macbook, except you'd have to have about 4 GB installed. If you've got any 4 GB Mac you can address about 3 GB without any trouble. On Windows XP you have to enable what's called the 3 GB switch to be able to address 3 GB in user applications - otherwise, the system keeps the extra ram for itself. In Logic 7.2 on a Macbook (Pro?) with 4 GB of ram you should certainly be able to work fairly smoothly with 3 GB ram loaded, as long as you have a decent (external) drive for your samples. I'm just a bit confused, because you say "one gig more" - are you thinking of having 3 GB installed in the Macbook? Do you have one 2 GB chip in there now? If you've got one 2 GB chip, then definitely blow the extra dough and buy another 2 GB chip. Don't get a 1 GB chip as an upgrade, it's just not worth it. You really want a 4 GB machine. Generally, you should be leaving around 512 MB for the system, so with 4 GB installed you'll be able to load your 3 GB, and still leave the system (and other background processes) plenty of room to do its thing. Hope that helps. J.

  • ...thanx for fast response... and well, it´s no pro book...otherwise, of course, i would just get another two gigs and forget about it... but i can adress 3 gigs on a mac book...that´s what my mac dealer said. beyond official specifications... got two 1gig bars in there right now... i´m just looking for somebody else telling me, that this constellation gonna work...on 10.4.8, with logic pro 7.2 as a host for vsl´s vi´s on an intel 2duo mac book...will i get the additional ram headroom in use or will the kernel hold it back for some reason... any opinions...?

  • I have just put 8GB RAM into my pre-Intel G5. Previously I had 4GB. But with the 8GB I did not get a substantial increase in instrument capability. Am I missing something regarding RAM? I though more RAM would mean more instruments proportional to the RAM? Is this right?

What is this RAM limit on a PC? Is there a limit on a MAC?

Thanks for your help I am baffled by the RAM information I read.

    Please help!

  • to dean... ....you have to wait for 64 bit support within leopard....the next step of osx....right now any application you run can only proceed and overview an amount of two gigs each... with the os update this autumn you will feel the difference of your new ram amount for sure...er, wait a minute, but don´t ask me if the pre intels will support the new osx...

  •  Thanks that does clarify things.

Oh, damn... sorry. This is a chipset thing on the Macbook, not the Macbook Pro. Yes? I only have 2 GB in my Macbook, so I never hit this limit... oops, sorry for the misinformation. ---J.

  • well, j. so it might be intresting for you, too..... i will try to push the ram limit of my mac book and let you know... 142,- euro...and i have 2 real gigs of ram for the vsl server only...a must have, i guess.... we will see... peace teloy

  • ...3 gigs of ram on a mac book... hmmm, here i am, pushed the ram as far as possible and as expected it´s not really a cure....addressing the ram was no problem, but it´s only a minimum of a benefit! after loading my basic document the activity monitor told me i got 20! mb left...uargh...and guess what, now, with three gigs of ram it tells me something of poor 30 mb left...well, could have been so nice.....i don´t wanna update my osx, but i´m afraid we´ll have to do so....the whole orchestra on one machine is a dream that´s getting closer, but we´re not there yet...
