     Hi all,

    My nice shiny new copy of the special edition arrived yesterday and so far I'm blown away, it's brilliant :)

    I do however have a slight newbie problem that I can't seem to work out. I've been playing about with a solo cello in cubase sx2 to get myself aquainted with how things work. My problem is if I score 2 notes at the same time, whichever is first gets cut off by the second note (or the lower note gets cut off entirely if quantized to be exactly the same start time). I have only legato in the matrix. Am I missing something or do I need to use 2 midi tracks to play simultanious notes with 1 instrument?

    "Legato" is a monophonic instrument. If you want two notes at the same time use something like one of the sustain patches.

    The patch you're using, the legato patch, is meant to only play one note at a time so that you can have smooth legato transitions from note to note. So, like DG said, it's only going to be monophonic. The other patches available to you, like sustain (non performance patches) will play more than one note at a time so you can play chords, etc. with them -- but they are also suitable for legato lines sometimes. When you're building up a realistic line of music with, say, the 'cello, you'll end up using a variety of patches to get the desired musical phrase sounding right. That's where the beauty of the VI interface comes in. You'll perhaps end up using dynamic patches, sustain, performance repetition, performance legato, and even more all within 8 measures. Then sometimes, the legato patch will be all you need for a specific part. Good luck and happy composing.
