Creating big Brass sound
Hi I have been trying to get that big in your face brass sound, for example like the brass in James Bond. I can get really nice brass in my orchestrations, but for full out massive brass sound, is it possible to get this type of sound using Vienna? How do you set it up, do I need different type of reverb? I notice non of the demos seem to really have the type of sound I am looking for, the examples in Brass II like Battle March, the brass still seem a nit distance not large enough. Can anyone help me with this? I am not having a go at vienna, I absolutely love it!!! But I just need to write a cue in the style of a James Bond brass cue and can't seem to get the brass big enough. Thanks, in advance!!! Simon

Hi I hope people don't think I was being nasty about vienna, as I absolutely love the product!! I just need some advice from the pros who have used it a lot longer than me! I really need help with this one, should I used specific reverb or set the reverb up in a particular way to get that massive sound? Are there certain articulations that I should be using? Please, any advice would be gratefully recieved.

I love Vienna too but in that context I would probably employ a trumpet player to give that bright, powerful and dynamic edge to the top end. It will also make everything underneath appear that much more realistic. Multitrack his parts, perhaps using different instruments or mic positions each time and you will get your desired sound - provided the arrangement and recording are good. ;) Saying that, you may also want to check out the power trumpets in the Special Brass VI. I don't have them myself but they appear more....well...powerful and bright! It's more of a big band brass sound you are after for James Bond, in my view. Good luck! C

A careful mix of the new TRPTS-6, Cornet and Appasionato Vlns.
Good luck.

Hi, thanks for the advice guys!! I'll keep working on it! Might try and find a trumpet player. I really like the piece Rob, very nice!! Can I ask how you set the brass up? How many trumpet VI's? How did you set your reverb up? I was wondering by using the depth technique in the reverb, are my brass to far back on the stage and I should bring them forward?

Simsy,
Thanks for your comments. Yes bring the trpts up closer for a more 'in your face sound'. Also the balance of the new cornet and the trpts-6 is key to give make it come closer to your listener (more cornet you use in the mix witht he trpts-6's, the 'smaller' and more upfront the brass will become.
I just use an instance of Wizoo W2 and horse around we pre-delay until I like where it 'sits' on the stage. No EQ was used on the brass but perhaps that is always a consideration.
Hope this helps.
Rob
