julian, also here we have to face the relations.
you can't compare RAM usage for arguing loading times, because the footprint of a loaded sample header with ViennaInstruments is significantly smaller than with any other app, so the number of loaded samples is much higher (i'd say 2.5 times average) - this samples have to be read from a harddisk.

harddisks can still deliver just ~30 MB/s random read, if you have a very fast drive (10.000 rpm, NCQ) possibly 40 MB/s ... this affects the theoretical limit. of course your PCI-bus can deliver ~250 MB/s to memory or processor in best case - but when does such a case really occur?

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • CM,

Yes I realise theoretical limits (my 4 disc SATA 2 raid is capable of transfering large files at over 200 MB) don't equate to actual load times and one only has to look at the sample count of the VSL library to realise the magnitude of available samples.

However it feels to me that in load times we have taken a step back recently (even accounting for the 16 bit to 24 bit data size increase)

Ever since first purchasing the Pro Library and latterly I have found them to be both brilliant to work with and, on my system at least, extremely stable/reliable. It is only with the load times (both initialisation times and sample header load) i encounter log jams and I am hoping within a few months they will improve.

  • news again: 5.0.6.1 http://syncrosoft.com/downloads/ [;)]

  • ...very speed..but sometimes a message display "...error no valid license...etc"
    restart and all good....but....

Just out of interest, what is the footprint per sample, cm?

This is something that just came up in a discussion I was having about Kontakt 2, so I'm especially curious.

  • Anyone of your 'courageous' ones tried this latest version???

A very timid Rob Elliott [:O]ops:

  • Rob-- I was wondering the same thing. I got 5.0.5.0 loaded, and all *seemed* to be fine-- then I go out of town for a few days and discover that within 24 hours that versions have come and gone rather conspicuously.

I do find this very troubling, especially when the new and improved 5.0.6.1 seems to have caused one user a problem already. [*-)]

The mere exodus of two versions in such a short time indicates that one set of problems continues to be exchanged for different set of problems.

It feels odd to have the now defunct 5.0.5.0 still running, but until I hear otherwise or until 5.0.5.0 totally falls apart on me, I'm going to hold my ground until further reports come in.

I am on 4.9.x and staying there!!! Longer loading times at least allow me to work. My clients could care less that the protection software of my sample library is having its issues - don't you know [:'(] (the clients have little or no empathy). However as another poster has said, waiting to load up cues with a director and producer sitting in here - can be frustrating. There's only so much talking about the weather one can do. [[;)]]

Hopefully Syncrosoft will get their act together - until then I am staying with what works.

    Rob

  • There is now a 5.0.6.2 on Syncrosofts website. I tried it out yesterday and i haven't experienced any issues as of yet. [H]

Austin - you are a braver man than I [:D]

Thanks for the report. Any faster load times Austin?

    Rob

  • For the record:
    I installed v 5.0.6.2 yesterday
I launched it and got a strange and disturbing error message. I supressed panic and restarted my Mac, and License Control Center opened perfectly and found all my stuff.

No other problems so far....in fact, here's the great news:
With all 10 VI's on my system, it used to take around 8 minutes to open the VI standalone.

Now - - - I had to log out and back in and do it again because I thought I was dreaming - - - 1 (ONE) minute!!!!!

    Brave new world!

    Regards - Colin

  • Hi Rob. It "feels" faster so that's always good! I've had some good luck thus far with the updates. It's so much better to not have to wait as long for it to start up! [:D] [/code]

Colin - you are making me want to be brave, but, er, I don't know.... [8-)]

I will if you will, if that's any consolation...

After all, what would you attempt if you knew you could not fail? [:P]

Ok - if you put it that way - first thing in the morning - for now its off to spend time with humans [[;)]]

    Rob

  • please don't forget to re-boot after installing something ... OSX (as a UNIX-like system) keeps running processes in memory and re-reads the updated files only after all instances of an application are removed from memory.
best choice would be to reboot before and after an update to make sure all conditions apply.
so strange behaviour of a more complex program after an update without a reboot shouldn't take you wonder ...

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thanks cm - that's exactly what happened to me (as I noted above).
    Good to be reminded.....

Did the update-- and did 5-6 reboots before Syncrosoft kicked in. It's working okay-- no appreciable difference from 5.0.5.0.

Oh-- I had to totally dump my Directory Manager and reload it, too.

  • Hi,

made the updates, first loading time is still about 5 minutes, the rest is fast, as it was already in the last version.
    (G5 DP2.5, 4.5 GB Ram, 10.4.7)

Hope it will get faster...5minutes still a long time, specially when clients are beside you & waiting.

I also have similar results with the latest. With 2.6 gig of samples - it takes about 5 minutes on all four slaves.
