why is there no picture of the Euphonium? [:'(]

    Hi DaveTubaKing,
I KNEW that you would ask this [[;)]]
Sorry, somehow I missed out on the Euphonium recording sessions - I promise should there be another opportunity (additional playing techniques?) I'll make some fotos especially for you!
    Cheers,
    Sabine

OK thanks Sabine I was just getting a bit twitchy that perhaps the Euphonium player was unwell and the recording didn't go ahead.

can you say who the player was and what make of instrument he played?

  • The Euphonium was played by Johann Schodl who also played the solo trombone:

    Here's the instrument:

  • Power trumpets !!! omg, i'm dreaming !!!
Can't wait to have some news ? will it be another product ? a gift ? [[;)]]

  • bass flute BDSM ftw [[:|]]

That Tam-Tam is fricken huge. I'd have to wear earplugs to play that, and I bet you had to turn the gain all the way down to record it [:D]

Now we just need Mahler's Hammer-Box and it will all be complete!

  • Power trumpets !! yessssssssssss !!

I am sure that those trumpets rocks like "Epic Horns"

    cant' wait [:D]

  • At least, the bass flute !!! [[[:D]]] [[[:D]]] [[[:D]]]
Please tell us where it will fly: will it be a free update ? a new extention, a special pack ?

    Thanks so much

I'm disappointed the Power Trumpets were recorded standing up - How on earth are we supposed to get them to 'Sit' nicely in the mix? [:D]

Also, I've a problem with the guy on the left - I'm concerned about how his lack of height may affect the overall sound. Can anyone clarify this?

Geez...you know, being a trumpet player is hard enough...and that guy probably gets crap ALL the time in the section!!! Geez! (just kidding)...looking foward to them...although, I'm not gonna lie...I will probably like my sound better...

well, that is, of course, if I keep practicing...I'm not a typical trumpet player at all...am I? : )

  • Dave tuba king is a little scary with this euphonium sample thing. What is going to happen when you get them? The birds will sing and the bells will ring I suppose.

Why does the bass flute have that harness setup? Is that normal for bass flute (somehow I can't believe that) or is this for a long session because of sampling, or what? I have never seen or heard a bass flute in "person" though having heard them on recordings (mainly in Mancini or John Barry scores) liked the sound.

One other thing that occurred to me looking at the beautiful Paiste gong - a gong roll. Unless I'm missing something there seems to be no normal soft-mallet tam-tam roll in all the VSL gong recordings.

you said it already yourself: there were many recording-sessions with many hours of playing, which is totally different, what you do usually with a bassflute in concert. the instrument is pretty heavy, imagine to hold a book for seven, eight hours day by day in a position you could see on the fotos, you would crave for a stand like we used.

    cheers, michi

Bill, i'd be more worried about who'd fix it if it fell down, or got dropped.

A highly trained instrument technician, who'd studyed for years.

    Or a plumber!

    Alex.

Sabine, is Johan really an orchestral player?
Only i know from experience, sitting in orchestras, that instrument is far too clean.......

    Hahaha!

Excellent Michi. And i can see he's capable of doing the splits as well! (almost.)

And all their instruments are clean....

Sigh, how things have changed from when it was considered de riguer to play an instrument that looked 'dated'.
Well at least that was what the brass section told me.......

    Regards,

    Alex.

  • Yeah, the euphoniums I knew of were a dark bronze color due to the amount of high-school grime coating them, as well as heavily dented by rebellious and violent trombone players. Perhaps that accounted for their delightful, permanent, nearly semi-tone sharpness.

  • Very nice photos. The photo with the bass flutist and the rope is creppedy scary.

From the photo with the baritone Heckelphone (Villa Wahnfried Röhre) in C with the microphone in front, I also know now why I always had the impression the instruments sound so close.

Is that the standard distance you record all instruments with?

Did you record any other then the Heckel S-Bogen with C-Mensur?

    .

  • I would say the average distance for the solo woodwinds recordings is about 2 meters. The first pict with the bassflute show the distance more clearly, because it's a side shot.
Also the photo sessions don't necessarily show the real miking.

    best
    Herb

No disrepect intended - Looking forward to hearing them. [:D]

    That's really interesting view.
I'm compsong a "heaven suite" with angel sounds.
The trumpets must come from the top - from heaven.
How can I place these power trumpets nicely in the mix that they blow from the heaven?

[... sigh ... in hopfully not too many months from now I will say: "Just use the "Grand Hall" setup of the Vienna Konzerthaus in the MIR, and use the special "Engels-Chor" (i.e. Angels Choir) HotSpot for positioning your trumpets!" ... which is a gallery about 12 to 15 meters above the actual stage ...]

  • Do we have a date of when this will be out? or atleast when there will be some "teaser" demos?
