    AT this point I use various VSL Horizon products running in Kontakt 2 on three different machines, all controlled by Digital Performer.

    As far as I can see I can not use Vienna Instruments without adding extra sequencers on the 2nd and third machines, since VI is described as a plugin. But I don't want to do this, both for reasons of cost (why do I need 3 sequencers???) and memory (why waste memory on those extra seqencers???).

    Is there some EASY and CONVENIENT way to use VI as a multitimbral standalone? If not I would suggest you consider developing it, as I am surely not the only user resisting making the switch for this reason ...

    Or is there something I don't understand???

    Hello Alan,

    you can use hosts like Steinbergs VSTack, Chainer, Forte, Plogue Bidule and more to load your Vienna Instruments on dedicated PC´s.

    Apart from Steinberg´s VSTack you can simply download test versions to see which one is best for you (test version means that you cannot save your setup, everything else works).

    A quick look seems to suggest that I would get less instruments per PC than I do with Kontakt2, since each instance of VI only gives one instrument, right? And as far asI can see, Vstack allows for 16 instruments only...

    yes, that´s correct, VSTack can host up to 16 VIs, but you can, e.g., plug in MIDI Chainer in one of these 16 MIDI Channels (that can all be adressed by a different port) which gives you another 10 MIDI Channels....

    In Kontakt you load different articulations, but you customize a whole instrument in your Vienna Instruments, which makes a big difference.

    Did you have a chance to watch the Video Tutorials?

    This will illustrate the difference.

    This is true.
    But interesting enough it was impossible for me until now to run out of CPU power (PIV, 3.2 GHz). The max load I got with 8 instances of VI was 25%.
    Now I allways set up instrument after instrument. As soon I finished an instrument, I press the "learn" button, play the track & press the "optimize" button in VI.
    This reduces the amount of ram needed by an instance of VI below 20%.
    Using this method you may set a complete orchestral score without running out of memory (PC, 2Gbyte ram).
