what are you sound outputs - i mean are you using a PC sound card or what?
How much contrast do you think you might want to achieve, without the relationship between the orchestral sections becoming distorted. Using woodwing and brass in mono setups rather than stereo helps with placement in the picture, which then helps with separation. Healthy panning of strings helps also.
I am a little confused as to your need for contrast, when I generally try and achieve a sound a which is homogenous (or do I mean homophobic)! One the hom-words anyway.
Rather than work with sections, you might look at the individual instruments. e.g. clarinet does well to have a little of the middle removed to let it sing through. This wouldn't work for all the woodwind section though. Likewise the brass instruments - one eq setting would not necessarily work for the whole section.
