  • The Symphonic Cube

    Hey,

Can anyone fill me in with some details on this? I've heard only whispers of things like 24-bit samples, broken chord appreggios, more perfoamnce tool options, but no actual details. is everyone a in the dark about this as me?

If VSL are releasing a 24-bit sample package, then that means they're recording everything again, right? So does that mean that, while they're at it, they can release this package in other formats too? i.e. Kontakt?

    Anyway, let the speculation begin!

  • Eveeyone is in the dark.

And no, it does not mean they have to record everything again, if they already recorded everything as 24 bit.

  • In a way, the silence regarding the Symphonic cube bothers me. Right now I'm one or two weeks away from buying the pro ed, and when spending such a huge amount of money on my career, I want to make the most informed purchasing decision possible. This includes what the future of my product will be like in terms of updates, support, price, etc. For example, if the symphonic cube is going to be 24 bit, I want to know in no uncertain terms so I can decide whether I want to purchase the 16 bit version. It is frustrating when you buy a product only to see a better version come out for exactly the same price, while the value of that other product goes down. This trend is completely understandable when you buy a car. But the VSL is not like that at all given the fact that it has had such an extended shelf life.

From a marketing standpoint, I think keeping the customer in the dark is a mistake. Just tell us what to expect and we can make these big financial decisions in the best and most confortable way. I understand the need for secrecy, but when you are dealing with significant portions of other peoples money, its best to be on the same page.[/i]

  • Inteleky,

That isn't an issue with VSL as they offer the VIP pricing that takes every cent you spend into consideration when you upgrade and you never pay for the same sample twice. If you were to buy the Opus 1+2 bundles now, then the Pro, it would take every penny of the Opus 1+2 bundles off of the Pro edition when you purchased. Go try it for yourself in the Products - Discount Calculator section.

VSL is the only developer that I'm aware of doing this and I applaude them for it.

So even if you buy the Pro Ed and the CUbe comes out one hour later - you get every penny of the Pro Ed off of the Cube.

  • Alan,

Thanks for that. I know my post came off as a rant!! [:O]ops: I don't want to sound ungratefull, especially since the Pro Ed is 30% off which is unbelevable. Also, the fact that you can discount what you already own is a fantastic incentive!

I guess my biggest concern is wether what I will get with the pro ed will somehow be incompatable with what is going to be released in the cube. I also can't imagine that Vienna would apply the same policy to the difference between the 16 bit library and the 24 bit one if only because cannot simply add extra samples to make up the difference. I wonder if vienna will be able to offer the same upgrade path from 16 to 24 bit?

  • Speaking of this 16 bit vs. 24 bit.

Anyone except me noitice that VSL's 16 bit samples sound BETTER than other peoples 24-bit samples? How is this possible? Or am I just imagining things.

    -Ben

  • They do sound pretty good! Especially when you use giga pulse.

  • Banquo, the files are even stored in 32/96 ... so we only have to wait until computers can handle such stuff ... [;)]

Inteleky, there will always be upgrade paths if the content is matching (e.g. violins to strings, ect), be it 16 or 24

dunk187, this might be related to the defined recording conditions, the excellent musicians and the expensive editing which takes place here [H]

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Oh I see,

So you're suggesting that VSL's 24 bit sounds will be even more astonomical [[:|]] ?! That has to be heard to be believed....I guess.

    -Ben

  • As far as I read last time Herb was talking about Kontakt he said that no Kontakt version of the Symphonic Cube is in the works. Giga and EXS are the formats to expect this thing happening. But not in two weeks, Dietz said not before the end of the year. But I wouldn't nail them on this.
