Beat, this looks really really good. This is spurring me on to get Opus1&2. But my question is, will most of this apply to the Horizon series as well? If not, is it somewhat useful? And would a newbie to VSL find these guides more confusing for Opus 1 or not?

Hi metrobot
I used for my examples those instruments which could show in a good way the effects I wanted to point out. But: These tips are valid for all the VSL instruments.
As you know the OPUS – series are extracts from the First Edition etc. On one hand you will get a reduced range of files > For example no dim- and cresc- samples, no 0sus-samples,... But on the other hand you will own Legato-samples and the Performance Tool which is not included with the First- / or Pro Edition. A further advantage is that you don’t pay samples twice. So if you’re going to buy the First– or Pro Edition once, you will pay only the additions.
By the way: Compare the articulations between your favorite products.
You will be disappointed in the very first days as a VSL – owner. You have thousands of samples and can’t reach the results of the well known demos. Perhaps you also don’t know Gigastudio, HALion, Cubase, Logic or what ever you will use. In this case it could be really a hard way to make progress.
But little by little you will learn to use the different samples. I’m sure my tutorials will help you too. You also will find all the sample-types (stac, 0,3s, trem, trill, sfz...) with every instrument. So if you got a "sample-type-overview" and how they sound...
I’m looking forward to your first demo(s). [:D]
All the best

You are a Great Man!!!
Thanks again for your help!!!
PS: The VSL team should take example on you...and provide a "REAL TUTORIAL" for this users!!!
Hi pitchoune
Thank you for your enthusiastic words of thanks...
By the way... this are "REAL TUTORIALS". [[[[[;)]]]]] [[[[[;)]]]]] [[[[[;)]]]]]
I propose VSL should do what we are not able to do: Producing samples!
So I confirm Pauls "take it easy!"... and I know you take it [[[[[;)]]]]]

Does any body know if this is a VST instrument or just one-shot samples(the solo strings library),,,What i mean is is it like a VST instrument where you can control how long a note is when playing it on a keyboard, or are they one-shot samples were you can only use that length of a note?

Beat the link explaining your workflow is dead. can you explain how you approach a particular line?
do you play it all on one generic patch first then copy and paste onto the needed tracks/patches programming as you go? or do you write it down on paper then play the long note on the long note patches and then the staccatto notes on the staccatto tracks the trills on the trill patch etc.......?
your overview is absolutely fabulous. and as some one else already said. i learned more in 5 minutes than in the last 5 months on how to use the VSL Pro library.
i use Digital Performer (G4) to trigger VSL (G5 8 gigs ram) in Logic so i am trying to get an idea of how to be workflow efficient. Anybody else using DP that has any ideas for me????
thanks again for the FANTASTIC explanation.

Hi homebilly
Thank you for your praising words! [:D] I don't know exactly which dead link you mean. But this one works. http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/tipspcmusic/index.html#50946996000209f06
As you can read there I most time start with a pure midi file recorded with my good old Roland SC8850. Because I often produce mock-ups I am able to do this voice by voice. Composers are in an other situation. They would like to have all the instruments present at any time and I think they don't want to go via a midi-file. So I think the work flow depends wether you want to compose or you want to produce a mock-up. But nevertheless my workflow is a possible way... which I also need to go because of my hardware equipment > I own only one PC.
An other possibility: VSL - MIDI. This is a Tutorial. There you can follow the origin of a short melody. This procedure I choose for all the instrument "I want to have in my orchestra". And also for every instrument I produce a wave file. The final orchestra mix happens on the waves' side.
I hope you've got the answer(s) you were looking for.
best wishes from Switzerland

*sniff sniff*... I smell MIR...
Hi Banquo
I also smell MIR for nearly two years. *cry cry*... [:'(] [:'(] ...
Your suspicion is on the wrong track.
MIR will be bring to the boil at VSL and not at beat-kaufmann.com...
So your hopes are dashed I think... *scream scream?*...
Yes it is correct you need a password for the moment. The VSL Acoustics Tutorial is loaded up but a good friend of mine is editing it just now - because English is not my mothertonge.
I think tomorrow evening the tutorial will be ready for you - without a password - *laugh laugh*... [[:D]] [[:D]]

wahoo!
one more question: at the start your version of Paladium from the Holberg Suite for chamber strings, do you have:
a) stac_sh, stac_sh, and then ' regular stac' for the pronounced notes, or just
b) stac_sh for all
Rob.
Hi Rob
b)

This Tutorial is really great my acknowledgement too!!!
But I wonder why youre GigaPulse "Large Hall" Picture looks so fresh and modern. My GigaPulse only shows such ugly Pictures of several instrument players.
Maybe its because Im using the Effekt bank from my Gigastudio Gigapulse Pro?

No you do every thing correct. I created some own settings with external IRs and its pictures. By the way I changed also the pictures of Tascam with some settings.
> See "Edit Current IIS"
... > Image Path for this Impulse Set (Overall Image)
There you will find:Overall Image Path for this Impulse Set:
Next is the Overall Image Path for this Impulse Set edit box, which provides a place for you to specify the path for the “Overall Image” of the impulse set. Once the iis is compiled, this image is placed in the graphic window of the Acoustic Space pane.
There is a browse button to open a navigation window to make it simpler to find a pre-existing .BMP or .PNG image file.
Note that the image to be inserted needs to be 225x127 pixels in size (Width by Height) and 24 bit true RGB.
Best wishes
