Gusty, the question about Opus 1 or Chamber Strings should mainly be decided by the sound of the sections. Theat means if you are looking for a full symphonic sound (what I used in this piece e.g.) then Opus 1 is it for you. If the chamber size is more your cup of tea (like featured in Maarten Sprujit's Illness and Recovery) then you better take Chamber Strings. As far as your concerns go, both have long sustains, I'd even say you have more possibilities with Chamber Strings articulation wise from what I can see (I don't own it yet). Please also have a close look on the detailed articulation lists provided on the VSL website:

That's the best peice of original music I've heard on the forum yet. Not for it's techinicality or production (both good) - for it's musicality. You've almost completely transcended the musical limitations of programming and computers with that one and that's saying a lot. I like it thanks a lot, I've saved it for future listening if you don't mind (just for myself). I hope that's OK. Really enjoyed it. I wouldn't compare that to any other composer even though one *could* do that. I think it's original and that is also saying a lot. Well, others may disagree but that's my opinion.

For me it's original - I think often when people say "Oh that's just like so and so" where if the composer they were listening to were famous they'd say hey, this *other* guy sounds like you (the other way around). Sometimes things are a knock off - that's another thing altogether. In this case, I think it's an honestly original work as far as I know. That is how it sounds to me. So I like it, especially for that reason, and basically as I said, it's musical. You can copy all the greats and still have a work that sounds like it's a midget on stilts (no offense to little people...)
There's always room for improvement but some things are good as they are, and imperfections often are their own perfection in my opinion.

Gustavo, there surely are sustains, even in variations, you have to look under "single notes" (which is the containing gig-file or folder). For violins e.g. these are: Short and normal staccato, détaché with 0.3 and 0.5 sec., each in two variations (downstroke and upstroke), sustained, espressivo with strong vibrato, and tremolo. That means short notes and detaches are coming in two variations, up and downbow, plus there are also normal sustains as well as espressivo sustains. In addition tremolos. From what I saw it's the same for the rest of the strings without the espressivo patch. VSL choices for recording may sometimes be worth a discussion, but they never miss essentials like sustains yet...

Sad, but not too much. Resolving. The problem could be solved... or not (open ending suggests awakening from the dream).
It's very soft, delicate, gentle. Quite minimalistic but very compelling.
