  • Popeye's 75th anniversary scored with VSL

    Hi all,

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Popeye the Sailor Man, and I was asked to write the score for the 45 minute CGI film celebrating his return to the screen. The film is entitled "Popeye's Voyage: The Quest For Pappy," and is currently available on home video, with a shortened version to air on Fox TV during the Christmas season.

The whole score was written using the VSL Pro Edition with the Performance Set. I overdubbed some live brass as well.

Check it out in your video store!

  • Congratulations Kevin,
    that's great news!

Do you know, if the movie will also be distributed in Germany/Austria?

    best

  • Alright Kevin. Way to go. Cool gig.

Can you tell us a bit about the setup used? EXS? GIGA? Carillons? etc...

    Thanks and kudos,
    Evan Evans

  • Cool! I _love_ spinach, too! :-]

  • Kevin--

Can you post a bit of the score?

    Best,
    Jay

  • Thanks guys. I'll ask the production company about posting some of the score, but for now I can't due to legal reasons.

As for the setup I used, it was all Giga. My template is usually winds, brass and perc on PC 1, strings on PC 2, and the performance set samples on PC 3.

I forgot to mention that I also used the saxophone library. I actually got a sax player friend of mine to ask me who I hired for the part!

    Kevin

p.s. Herb - I sent you a PM about the score, but haven't heard back.

  • Congrats Kevin and VSL

  • Kevin,

I usually have in my contracts that I can use teh music for:

    Demonstration Purposes
Soundtracks (Further Negoation May Be Necessary)
    Public Archive Purposes

    Evan Evans

  • Evan -

There was no contract. Long story.

Herb - I sent you another PM. I have some cues to send to you.

    Kevin

  • Kevin,

    Ok.

    Evan

  • This Friday at 8:30 pm, Fox is airing a 22-minute TV version of the film. Hope you can all check it out!

  • Looking forward to hearing your score Kevin!

  • I just watched it tonight on fox...WOW that was awesome! too bad the damed story dialog kept getting in the way...great job!

  • DAMN!!!!!!!!!
I actually saw some of it on TV last night after the Simpsons and thought... this sucks...CLICK
Then I read this thread today.
    [:'(]

  • Tony,

That's hilarious! I hope you are serious, becuase it makes it all that more hilarious.

Anyway, KEVIN, I guess we all have our fans and our detesters!

    Evan

  • Just to clarify, I meant the show sucked, not the music! I'm mad because I didn't see this thread beforehand. I would've liked to listen!

I guess I don't come across too clearly sometimes.

Incidentally, I never say anyone's music sucks. People spend hours making it, and anyone who says such things about other peoples' music can only be doing it to feel better about their own. And if they have to do that, their own music must REALLY suck.

I try giving constructive criticism: X could be done better, Y sounds good...

Funny.. I have no problem saying a TV show sucks though.. LOL

  • well I won't say it sucked, but I've definitely seen better CG animation before. Music was good!

  • Thanks guys! The TV version was really cut down from the DVD. ProTools came in very handy in editing the whole score down to the 22 minute TV version. A lot of great VSL sounds got left out of the TV version, so if you've got kids, get them the DVD (It's kinda hard to sit through as an adult...)!

  • just out of curiousity, how long did the project take? I'm just curious as to timeframes when doing this sort of thing.

  • I was given a total of 4 weeks to write, record live instruments, mix 44 minutes of music, and cut down the DVD version to a 22 minute TV version. That's a lot of time these days - but with animation, it's a little different. I would get rough pencil/wireframe animation sent to me at least twice a week. Since the final animation would invariably differ from the rough version, I'd have to add/change a lot of things to conform to picture. I think at the very end I had amassed about 20 videotapes worth of version changes.
