I hope you realize that Hans Zimmer uses multitracking approaches to orchestral recordings? He records brass and strings separately, along with his mockup tracks. Often his brass and strings are combinations of recordings (stacked even?) and samples. Although I like his stuff, I would not use it as examples of orchestral recordings....

And you can say everything, there is nothing else but violins, cellos/basses, and of course some brass, may be some woodwinds, but i doubt they take a large part in that strings sound

An interesting subject by all means. I think that "epic strings" is really a subjective term. If I had to pick between Carter´s two clips, I definite would choose the Star Wars clip from Return of The Jedi. It has good instrumentation and balance, and the mix is really neutral and "honest". I simply dont like the sound of the scores in episode I and II. They are mixed/written far too polished, and it sounds more like a giant synth. But I do respect and admire John Williams work and musicianship. He is in fact one of my favourite filmmusic composer.
One of my favourite "epic string" pieces are Richard Strauss "Von den Hinterweltlern" ( from "Also sprach Zarathustra", Op.30) after the introducing tremolos and pizzicatos, where those delicious strings starts their "espressivo" effort (especially the cellos do realy shine)
But to if one need to get a string section to sound "epic", I think one have to not only look on the mixdown, reverb, eq etc.:

A famous but still effective cliché [:D] is for example make the cellos play in a high pitch while playing unison with the violins. hmm... maybe i´ve heard on a hollywood film somewhere....? [[;)]]

Condescending? I do NOT think so. I am right here to say what I am thinking... and this should be positive critics to the VSL team. Since saying how wonderful everything sounds will not only help develop a product. I am very much convinced about the VSL stuff and I love it. But I am working with professionals all day long. To be honest, what the violins in some articulations sound like is not useable in their opinion...

Your statement was surprising me a lot and is almost condescending to me... in some way offending. Are you working pro, William?

William was off the deep end with his last posting. Funny thing is I got banned from VSL for continually pestering them at fever pitch with criticisms and suggestions, all in the name of making their product better. But they didn't want to ehar that their product needed improving. We've since revisited that and cleared that up (I got a thank you from the VSL team).

William however berates both music and people as well as things, and doesn't even get a warning. I am on my second warning SO SAYS the superiority at VSL, and my warnings for posts that actually didn't offend anyone. In fact they were quite cheerful and spirited. William on the other hand is NOT cheerful at all.

I don't see much positivity coming from his berating posts.

P.S. William is an interesting fellow, but there is some hypocrisy going on here when I get banned for testing the superiority of VSL's product and William goes untouched whilst berating and otherwise being negative.

P.S.S. I don't think the VSL team, moderators here included, fully understand the English language at the level that we native speakers do. The subtleties in my posts have always been cheerful, and the subtleties of William's posts. I am just a little upset about such hypocrisy.

I meant if you had the first four listed sampled instruments, you would not need the second four of that list since they would be possible with layering. But maybe that is not what you were talking about?

Um, yeah, I understand, no, I was talking about different sized combinations to be sampled. yeah if you had all 14 violins individually sampled you wouldn't need the ensemble, but I think it sounds better to sample them together.

You can trust in our intention to include all reasonable and executable suggestions of our users in this product.

For competitive reasons, I can't talk too much about the Symphonic Cube at the moment. There is so much innovation and content included. So many new and revolutionary things will be introduced. The development is a much bigger task than the development of the Pro Edition.

So please be patient, you won't be disappointed.

Just a little comment about VSL future :

I follow this company since the beginning. There wasn’t a hard drive pro edition scheduling for next years ?

In 24bit 44.1, if I remember well. I don’t see it anymore now.

No more hard drive edition ?


Anyway, this library is recording in 24bit 96khz. And GS3 is now 24/96 too.

So maybe planes have changed...

With a hard choice : re-editing the whole library in 24/96 (enormous work, I presume), or adding more samples ?

What would be the best investment ?

Probably a big dilemma to solved...

ALL VSL is recorded at 32Bit 96Khz.

it is downsampled and bit dithered for release to those with only average systems which is the general population (24Bit, 48Khz being the best average).

That's really very great stuff you say above. It sounds to me like you are implying that there are more tools that will be coming than the Rep, Leg, Alt. In fact you seem to make it quite clear on that point. (I play poker, and lots of what someone doesn't say comes through in what they do say).

They were unsure about the delivery medium and considered delivering on a harddrive. I guess you can expect they still have to compress the files to keep the costs down, so you can't use that drive for streaming and have to install the library to your own drives just as right now from the DVDs.

Herb, do please give this some thought. IMO VSL is way ahead in attention to sound and musical performance...this comes with a steeper learning curve for the user however.

If those creative brains around you can simplify the way the user accesses the articulations, it would be an enormous improvement. Sometimes, under deadline pressure, I have consciously chosen another library because I figure I will probably have to spend more time finding the right EXS instruments with VSL.

Maybe VSL really does need its own soft interface to become more simply accessible for the user.

If I had the library on a drive I would never use it for stream. Only for easy (and quick) installation.
That medium is so fragile...

On another side : how many hours to put the Synphonic Cube on a drive with DVDs ?

Two ? Three ? Maybe four, it depends of the size ...

With DVDs The first thing I would do is to buy a drive only for the DVD to drive transfer, to do it one time, definitively...

And then using that drive only for drive to drive transfers to provide our ‘Gigastudio farm’.

I couldn’t spend the half of a day to only transfer DVDs for all dead stream drive... IMO it’s impossible in a productive environment.

But can we spend 6000 bucks or more for a fragile drive, with possible virus infection ? Or being a ‘read only’ drive, maybe, why not...
