  • Perf Tool Feature Request

Just wondering if it would be possible to add a "NEW" item to the File Menu.

It's much easier to start with a blank slate after working with a given setup. When you are through with a very busy setup and wish to start over, it would be nice to choose NEW and get a blank slate.

    Thanks

  • Hi Tom,

generally a good idea, but maybe this is helpful:
I've saved a "new" file to the desktop with a blank configuration.

If I'd like to start a new one, I simply drag and drop this file into the performance tool.
For me this is faster than going to the file menu, and it is as fast as using any shortcut.
Generally I'd like to use the drag and drop feauture.
I've placed my most used ".vlp" and ".pal" files directly below my performance tool on the desktop.

    best

  • Wow, Herb, I feel pretty dumb. As a Mac user, I'm just getting used to the PC, and I didn't know you could drag whole setups into the Tool. I just tried what you said and it works great.

    Thanks...I'm learning....

  • (hmm, i don't want to rant about right mouse buttons now but) hey, drag&drop is pretty usual to actual GUIs [;)]
hint: our tool developer has his roots in the mac-world - would you agree this helps?

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Though I have to agree the option of having it in the menu would be nice. The drag and drop thing then would apply in the section: tips&tricks for advanced users [:D]

  • Yes having it in the menu is much more of an expected user interface standard. Plus, when it is in the File menu it is standard that one would have the ability to use a keyboard equivalent (like command/N) for "new."

  • by the way, it comes into my mind that default values are loaded every time you're opening the performance tool. this is definately a _new_ or blank template. need more? save it as default.vlp, the performance tool will open it when launched

  • Christian, that's not the problem, it's after you have worked on a piece for a while, and want to switch to something else...something you haven't saved. It might be an all new setup you haven't needed before. You need a blank slate at this point. This is so standard as a user interface element that it was just surprising not to see implemented. I like Herb's suggestion and all, but it still is a sideways measure compared to how virtually all other applications on either PC or Mac platforms work. Definitely an interface GUI omission. JMHO.

  • To me, whether you go to the menu or drag a file onto the program (which is a great tip - I didn't know about that) is a vanishingly small question. We're talking about a matter of 1/2 second either way.

  • cm - that's what I'm doing, restarting the tool. It doesn't bug me, nor take much time (icon in the quicklaunch bar), nor do I need in very often, but when I was looking for it first I started with the menu...

Perhaps you can implement that in v5.13 of the tool [;)]

    PolarBear

  • I'll try to implement it in v2.05 - [:)]
