  • 12 Second Violin section in Symphonic Cube?

I see, that Pro edition lacks second violin section, though it has second flute etc.
Is symphonic cube planned to have 12 Second Violin section, like in Garritan's sets, so that we could have a standard 14-12-10-8-6 quintett [*-)]:

  • That would be nice Abel. The work around now is to use a combination of the violas from VSL and other string libraries for your 2nd strings. It's not perfect but serviceable.

    Rob

  • Well, a workaround is not the word that maches VSL well.
They're meant to make no compromise, built to be a pinnacle of all orchestral libraries [:D]
I'm sure Herb has something in his sleeve [[;)]]

    any official statement [*-)]:

  • Ok... help an idiot.. what is it that makes 2nd Violins needed? Do they sound differently? Cant it be done ith some panning and volume?

Whats the deal with 2nd Violins?

  • Performance set Pro edition has two different violin patch so you can use one of it for your 2nd violin part. Different panning for all strings give good results ...

  • I think some various divisi are in order.

    28,14,14-b*,10,8,5,3

    *b refers to second section

This way we can map our chords and voicings appropriately as they would be balanced in real life.

You can tell a seasoned orchestral composer isn't running these sessions or the VSL product line.

  • Recording a 2nd violin section with 12 players, does have really minor priority on our "to do" list.

    Why?
First our samples are recorded center stereo.
Second we did a lot of tests with different section sizes. And there is nearly no sonically difference between 10, 12, 14 or 16 players.

Therefore we decided to focus generally on expanding the articulations of the violin section. To start recording each existing articulation a second time (with 12 players), seems for us as a waste of time, money and ressources.

But, we are finishing these weeks our small string sections.
(6 -4 - 3 -2), for chamber string orchestrations, divisi groups, and or course for layering with the larger string sections.

I've done first tests, combining solo violin, small and large section.
I can tell you, it's incredible how many options you get for designing "your" string sound.

    Dear Herb,

reading this is like angels voices in my ears!

The small string sections are the most important add-on for me. I love the size of the VLS violin sections - I only have the First Edition- but I find them a wee bit too large and "expansive" in some arragements I'm doing (i do mostly electronica/acid jazz) so most of the time i recorded on 2 pass a live string quartett or a 3-2-1 sections instead.

Please make it a separate product so that I don't have to buy the Symphonic Cube just for it!!

(BTW I'm about to convince myself to upgrade to the PRO just to get the alto flute and the string glissando [*-)]

Thanks anyway for sush a great product!

    GG

  • I also think, that the smaller strings sections are a very important add on, or even a powerful stand alone product.

Therefore it's planned as an "separate" product.

  • This is GREAT news! [:D]
    I assume including performance programs?

This will give incredible flexibility for proper chord building and more intimate stuff, even for Opus 1 users.

  • Separate products are great, more choice for the consumer without being forced to buy it all in one go. [;)] Herb, I hope the new french horns will be a separate product too! [:D]

  • Yes, sir. [:D]

also the french oboe and some more surprises.

  • ROCK ON!

Question... will the Symphonic Cube feature EVERYTHING? Horrizon etc?

Right now, the Complete Orchestral Package isent complete anymore [:)]

That is some great news, Herb.

Crhistian, I don't know how you know about what is contained in the Symphonic Cube? And as for Pro Edition C.O.P. - you still can add Horizon series products... nobody said it will contain everything?

  • What are you talking about Polar? I never claimed to know whats in the Symhonic Cube... Quite the opposite. I was actualy ASKING about it! So i really dont get what your on about...

At the point The Complete Orchestral package was made.. it was COMPLETE... now horizon products have been released, so it isent complete anymore.. hence my question. Will the symphonic Cube contain it all?

Again... what was your problem with my post?

  • Actually there was not a problem, for me at least... but think e.g. of Horizon VSL Overdrive. Do you want to see that in a "Complete" Symphonic Cube package, too? I actually wanted only to hint it is not announced yet, as I also gathered from other postings in the forum it is not even known for sure by the VSL team, apart from the dawning surprises they are talking about. I'm sure they announce the stuff early enough before it goes to stores. I basically said you should keep yourself updated with the articulation lists that are provided. Not to mention I think there will never be a "complete" package by VSL in near future! They keep growing and evolving, so don't let the name fool you. It is complete as of a series, like all modules of First Edition form the Complete First Edition Package. Or all modules (from the Cube and the Performance Set) form the Complete Pro Edition Package.

  • Right.. but its not impossible that they could have decided that all relevant orchestra stuff from the horizon series woul dbe included... a fair question IMHO

And thanks for the link Herb
