    Hi all,

    I've been using the VA-10_SOR_PERF_LEGATO quite a bit, and I'm having trouble getting a smooth sound with it. Checking the PDF manual (the printed ones haven't arrived yet), a comparison with the violin equivalent shows up a major difference:
    VL-14_SOR_PERF_LEGATO - diagram: 2 semibreves slurred together (8ve apart)
    VA-10_SOR_PERF_LEGATO - diagram: 8 staccato quavers in a slur (like a rep)

    the resulting sound is more of a detaché, or 'down-bow staccato'. Weird.

    Giga is showing the notes moving correctly - ie hopping between keyswitch registers, so I don't think it's the performance tool (the Violins work fine)

    is it possible that the giga file wasn't the sord_leg, but instead the sord_det from a later edition? :/

    I dont have Pro, only opus... but I generaly get the detache kind of sound from my legato strings.

    Could you try upload a small mp3 so we can hear it?

    I too have Opus 1 and have found the legato strings to be a bit brutal, unlike any other Perfromance instrument. However, there are Relase Control patches (= RC) operated via the mod wheel which smoothe the strings somewhat.

    An update for the legato strings would be great.

    I can't say for Opus - but the rest of my legato strings are fine - not at all brutal. It's just the Muted Viola Ensemble that doesn't seem to follow the style of the other strings in its class.

    I mentioned that the score diagrams are different, even though the naming convention is the same - the sound reflects the diagram, but the diagram doesn't reflect the name, if you follow...

    is anyone at VSL willing to comment? I'm happy to wait until Herb and co are back from NAMM and other shows...

    I'm also happy to upload (if necessary) any MP3s to illustrate.

    What is it about viola strings that makes them always the worst samples in every library that's ever been produced. It's for this reason, I think, that I never used any viola section strings in my entire life.

    I think the VSL string sordinos are fine in general, but are probably better for colour than melody - then again, I've only had Opus for a few days, so there's a lot to learn yet.

    I'm sorry - I think you've missed the point entirely. The Viola samples are good quality - they sound really good. If I was trying for a detaché sound, then they would mix in fine. All I am saying is that they don't behave like the Violins or Cellos with similar patch-names. Let's not start a flame war, eh?
    Does anybody else who has never used this product have an opinion? [8-)]

    Have I used it ? Not yet. Have I listened to it? I can't describe how many times. I'm not flaming anything. I was just making an observation, which, in the end, made you defend this product, and by doing so you gave me and others, who might lurk here, a lot more vital information.

    sorry to bump this again...

    has anyone had a chance to look at this issue in the muted violas? I don't want to cause any problems, but I wouldn't mind an official response ...! [:)]

    Everyone was at NAMM, so hopefully Peter, you'll get your question answerred soon. I'm certainly curious as to why you are experiencing non-legato in the legato Violas.

    Evan, naturally I forgot about NAMM... of course I'll wait [:)]

    if you have a minute, could you check your Pro Edition Manual? (PDF) Have a look at the equvalent score diagram for legato con sordino violins and violas, then check these against regular legato violins and violas. I think you'll see an irregularity. My regular legato violas are smooth as silk.

    Hello Peter,

    For the Violas muted perf-leg you should have three programms:

    p (normal - for faster passages)
    p+0sus (the same as above but with a faster starting note)
    p-sl (for slower movements)

    the last one uses longer blendings between the notes.
    Maybe this is the version you are looking for.

    Thanks Herb - I'll give that one a go.

    Could you please clarify the reason for the score example differences? Sordino violins are p49 of the PDF manual and violas are p77 - did you know there isn't a mention of the _sl instrument in the manual?
