  • Vienna, Maya...Is it safe to go to MAC OS 10.4.8?...

    Hi Maya,

..Is it safe to go to MAC OS 10.4.8 ?...

OS is availbale for both Intel AND G5....

    what's the scoop?

    thanx,

    SvK

  • Hi Steven,

I upgraded to 10.4.8 yesterday (PPC G5) and didn´t experience any irregularities so far, but I have to admit I don´t trust it yet.

We will run some more tests tomorrow on PPC, as well as on Intel based Mac. I´ll let you know our results ASAP.

    Best,

    *Vienna*-Maya

  • I've running it on PPC and Intel all day with no troubles.

  • I've been running for a couple of days on my G5 - - no problems, so far, with Logic or VI. A couple of oddities, however. I ran Disk Utility to check and/or repair the startup disk before installing 10.4.8. I also repaired permissions before and after installing. I then ran Disk Utility after installing 10.4.8 and got error messages to the effect that Disk Utility was unable to fix the problems. I then ran DiskWarrior which found and corrected errors regarding volume information and item count on the startup disk. Afterwards, Disk Utility pronounced the disk healthy.

Prior to any of this, I made a complete backup -- using SuperDuper to clone the startup drive - - just to be safe. (With a cloned drive made by Super Duper, the only thing that differs from the original startup drive are certain software authorizations - - especially those from NI - - that use ID numbers specific to a particular system on a particular startup disk, but it only takes a few minutes to deauthorize the original disk and reauthorize the clone - - so you can go back to work right away.)

  • just to mention: it is highly recommended to check (and if needed repair) permissions as well as backup the system drive before running this upgrade. a significant number of kernel-panics after the upgrade are reported.
my experience is that the best method of backup is to start from the OS X DVD, use the disk utility from there and create an image of the system volume on a second drive - this makes sure you can go back without too much effort to a working system in worst case.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

    Brilliant and wise advice-- indispensable!

  • Hey-- if anyone with a Quad PPC goes to 10.4.8, I'd like to know if there are any specific observations regarding Apple's claim to have fixed performance issues on the Quad PPC.

    Thanks.

  • Hi JWL,

on my Quad PPC 10.4.8 works fine with Logic´s latest Update. No Probs so far, no performance improvement noticed either, i´m still curious. Anyone else?

    Best Oliver

Oliver-- thanks for that important information. It's just as important that you are not experiencing any problems either.

I'm curious because I'm not certain if my next computer will be a Quad PPC or a Mac-Intel.

A PC is not out of the question either.
