  • Matrix Assign Preset Files - Organizing & Uneeded Folder

After moving my VSL library to a different hard drive and sucessfully running the directory manager, the matrix preset list on the right shows all the folders in my VSL library (and not just the /A - Strings Preset - Files and others). This is really annoying because I have to scroll all the way down to get to the presets. There is no way to reorganize the order of the folders unless I rename each folder in my VSL library. For example, 01 Solo Violin shows up in the Matrix Assign preset list yet there is nothing in that folder. If I scroll to the bottom I will find /A - Strings MATRIX - Files. How can I fix this? Is there a way I can remove the uneeded folders in the matrix assign window? And why do I need to see /TheVolumeSetiungsFolder in the list of presets? Can i get rid of that?

  • You can save the same configurations as a user custom, whether or not it is unedited from the factory default.

Then you could create a custom patch/matrix folder organized any way you want.

Sinced you already have a custom folder, try to save your console to that folder with a name that suits your purpose.

  • welcome sloanlogic,
if you see /TheVolumeSettingsFolder this should mean you have added the root of a volume (using the drag&drop feature?) in the directory manager - and there might be also other ones not needed there.
also possibly your system is set to display this (usually unvisible) folder - is it a network share using SMB or did you copy the files using SMB from a share?
can you remove this folder using the directory manager? i'd assume it is a zombie-folder created during copying the files and you can actually remove it physically.

  • it seems really silly that I would have to re-save all of the matrix presets and rename everything in a custom folder.

Shouldn't their be an update to the directory manager so you can setup the tree views the way you want? Someone had mentioned that the directory manager should in fact be a part of the actual program. I completely agress 100% This is how the Kontakt engines work. I own the East West Platinum Library and their directory system is within the program. Why can't Vienna operate the same way? Granted I can't change the names or have custom folders in East West, but the flexibility of the Vienna directory manager is severly limiting and could use improvement.

I will check to see if the root volume is within the directory manager. One thought I have is that I have my 750GB hardrive partitioned into 2 drives and Vienna detects that. Should I not have a partition? Is this why I'm seeing extra folders in the preset list? (The directory manager sees it as /Voume/VSL) My hardrive is called VSL (600GB partition, and another 100GB partition). This is most likely it huh?.....ugh...

  • unfortunately it seems i don't understand your reply and some questions remain unanswered ...
    - did you copy the files using SMB or other network share?
    - is your system set to display hidden folders?
    - have you added the folders using drag&drop?

if yes to the latter i'd assume you have added the whole volume to the directory manager.

to integrate the directory manager to the ViennaInstruments GUI would IMO not have too much benefit. on one hand you should not need to use the DM too often (basically only after having moved library data to another volume or computer) and on the other hand we recommend to have not running ViennaInstruments software while adding folders or scanning.

it doesn't matter if you have partitioned your drive (such creating volumes), but dragging a complete volume on the directory manager might add a series of empty folders (and/or folders not containing any relevant data)and so making the list in the VI GUI looking a little bit disorganized.
just remove the useless folders in the DM and i'm sure the displayed structure will become better.

That might have been my suggestion in a thread which has gone without a reply for some time, as far as I know. It was a passing thought, which in fact I began to second guess whether I should have even mentioned it. To be honest, I actually began to think the suggestion was silly myself.

I constantly have to remind myself what a huge step forward VI is over VSL PE and to remain as cautious and constructive in my critical observations as possible. Setting up custom directories and custom templates may take some time at first, but once I've configured my most used patches, matrices, and have organized my directories, it really does eliminate the need to constantly hunt and peck for sounds with every project and speeds up the workflow on subsequent ones.

  • hey-

my system is not set to display hidden folders

I did not use a SMB network share

I used drag and drop within the directory manager

    thanks.

I see the logic of not putting the directory manager within the program. It would be nice to have a little more flexibility or how to organize the tree view within the directory manager, but I guess that would cause even more problems.

  • I figured it out.

Within the directory manager, you need to select the Custom folders... button

Then make sure it is set to:

    Users/johndoe/Vienna Instruments Custom Data

Otherwise you will have tons of folders in the tree view like I did when u open up VSL.

    Thanks for your help guys.

If you could reply to the possibility of improving the organizing of the tree view within the directory manager, I think it's worth discussing.

    Happy playing.
