  • A little confused what to buy first

Hi everyone, I have read many topics regarding the different libraries. I need some advice from people out there who are producing and writing for pop contemporary please. My music is in the style of Josh Groban, Bocelli, Bond and vocal melodic pop with a classical crossover as the above artists. I am a little confused as to what String VIs I should start with. I have Sonic Implants already...but do I start with Orchestral Strings 1 and 2 or Chamber, I've been advised both ways??? I was also going to purchase Solo Vi anyway with either purchase of Chamber or Orchestral. Could someone set me straight as I am about to buy and dont want to spend the money and realise too late. Would like to buy Chamber and Orchestral set but can't afford both at this stage. I've read posts on this forum vouching for both ways, I guess it's a very personal oppinion...however if there is anyone out there using the VIs for these styles of music...please let me know thanks.

  • I started with the full string collection Orch I+II. This would be good for you if you want to sound like the arrangements you mentioned. Chamber strings are a smaller sound and more specialized. If you want a big string sound get the big strings first. SI strings you can blend in if you want or use them for a smaller sound.

  • Joseph--

Some may disagree, but here's my take:

For the type of music you're doing, I say get Orch Strings I & II. To my thinking, if there were just one set of strings made by VSL it would be this collection that would take priority. The fact that Chamber Strings is available can complicate the decision, but the Orch Str I & II serves as a fantastic nuts-and-bolts strings section for a great variety or purposes.

No doubt, Chamber and Solo Strings have their importance. Personally, I knew that I needed the whole kit from the outset, and while it was a steep financial committment, I really had no choice.

But also consider what type of sound you really want. Groban's music and others you mentioned do have a range of intimate and lush string writing. I just think Orch Str I & II will give you the greatest range to start if only one section can be had.

However--- if you know that the sound of the Chamber Strings is what you want and need for your projects, then that's a musical decision only you can make. Clearly, Solo Strings will address needs that are quite different and that should therefore be a completely different decision to make apart from choosing between Chamber or Orchestral.

However, I doubt that VSL would have presented the Chamber Strings as it's "main" string section, and for that reason I give Orchestral Strings one or two priority points above Chamber. I also have found that Chamber Strings is a more unique sound that doesn't always stand in where a full string section is needed. There are, however, easy ways to apply Orchstral Strings in more intimate arrangements until such time the Chamber set can be acquired.

With that in mind, I would also strongly encourage that the Extended edition of Orch Str I & II be secured early on. While the Standard edition will do much, it is very easy to find oneself wanting for more very quickly.

Besides, you get use of the Extended collection right away for free for a limited time-- which, sorry to say, does well to spoil you!!

I just think that for the long term the Orch Str I & II will go further to serve you well. Chamber really is like the icing on the cake, but get your cake in place first!

    Just my opinion.

    Good luck.

  • LOL-- Dave-- posting a minute apart from each other? Good man! [:P]

  • Didn't know it was a minute as I ran off, but you nailed the issue exactly JWL.

    Joseph - What he said.

  • Thankyou so much gentlemen you have put my mind at ease...I was leaning towards the orchestral strings...thanks again for the professional advice.

  • Hmmm...

I was looking for intimate sounds that could be more lush and big when I needed them to be.. it looks like trying to make orch strings sound intimate is easier and better than making chamber strings sound lush?

I have posted another thread.. I am new to VSL.
