  • More Beginner Qs

    Hi All,

Ok before I start, just want to say those Peter & the Wolf demos are fantastic - as are the other ones. Well done Herb.

So being a newbie to all this (yes another one - sorry) I have some questions over which version to get.

First some personal background. I am fairly new to recording/mixing (about 18 months) and whilst I can play piano well (Grade 6) I have little experience of composing for orchestra. I have written some songs and arranged quite a few more - but nothing spectacular - primarily because I thought my Edirol MIDI instruments sound a bit weak. I enjoy creating mood/movie theme music as well as jazz and rock (also play guitar).

Hence VSL. I use HalIon and Kontakt but not GIGAstudio - so I will have to import the sounds - which shouldn't be an issue, and I've read you can get the Performance tool working too (as per posts in this forum).

So onto my questions (finally). [:O]ops:

    1. With my background, and bearing in mind I cannot afford both The Cube and The Performance Set which one should I get to write some decent Movie type music?

    2. Are all the instruments available in both The Cube and The Perfomance set, or is Performance limited to strings?

    3. If I don't buy both Perf & Cube do I still get the future discounts on the PRO set - when I eventually have some more money.

    4. If I buy the GIGA version now and say a Kontakt version comes out in a few months, can I swap my DVDs? For Free or a nominal charge?

Hope I haven't bored you all to death. Any thoughts or advice anyone can offer is much appreciate.

    TIA

    Tim

  • welcome timkiel,
rummaging around this forum you may find out there might currently be one or another issue to export VSL to halion or kontakt ...
if you get the cube now, you're entitled to upgrade to the pro-edition of the cube (whenever you want) - but you will have to pay the full price for the performance-set.
all (currently released) instruments are covered in the cube - the performance-set has some more special articulations supplementing to these instruments (for legatos, ect)
if you *buy* the library, you're obtaining a personal license - which means you can do with the *sounds* what you want (make your performances, tweak and translate them, whatever) - except reselling them within other products or leaving them to someone other for productive work.
the upgrade-policy is very generous - any version will entitle you for an upgrade to any (evtl. to be released) next version eg. giga first to EXS pro, ect

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thanks Chrstian.

As a supplementary to Q2. As the Perf set is around £200 UKP cheaper than the standard cube and appears to contain all the instruments plus special articulations (e.g. legato) am I best off getting this as my primary purchase. Or does the Perf set not contain any standard articulations - e.g. pizzicato, macarto etc..

(As an aside is there no list that details the contents of the DVDs for both Cube and Perf set - other than the list of instruments found under product info on this site, i.e. something that lists instrument+articulation on Cube DVD 1 etc etc)

    Cheers

  • Welcome Tim,

    1. With my background, and bearing in mind I cannot afford both The Cube and The Performance Set which one should I get to write some decent Movie type music?

If you are just starting to work with samples, I would suggest to start with the Cube. The basic sets of all instruments are very easy to use.

Another possibility (more expensive) is to bundle one cube section (strings or brass), with the Performance set. Simply choose the instruments, which are more important for your work.

    2. Are all the instruments available in both The Cube and The Perfomance set, or is Performance limited to strings?

Brass, woodwinds and strings are featured in the Performance set.
(Some percussion also in the upcoming Pro Edition)

    3. If I don't buy both Perf & Cube do I still get the future discounts on the PRO set - when I eventually have some more money.

You will get ofcourse the upgrade discounts for the modules you own.

    4. If I buy the GIGA version now and say a Kontakt version comes out in a few months, can I swap my DVDs? For Free or a nominal charge?

The best way to crossgrade (IMO), is to upgrade later on a different plattform, if you like. The Pro Edition includes for example the complete content of the First Edition.

I'm sorry, but we can't offer simple crossgrades for free. The production costs of programming a new native format are very expensive.
    Also manufacturing costs etc.
The size of our library, you know...

By the way, a detailed articulation list (for First and Pro edition) should be online tomorrow.

    best wishes
    Herb
