This is a song from a musical I wrote last year. Upon getting the best original score award this year in a local theatre awards ceremony (Hong Kong), all my friends and the cast of the company urged me to redo this particular song with myself singing. [:O]ops: So I decided to re-patch the MMO and do a recording of it, and here it is. [[;)]]

    Phenomena (Concert version 2006)

It was originally written for a bass-baritone and my voice does sound very thin as compare with what I had in mind when I wrote it. [*-)]??: Didn't bother transposing it or else the oboe and trombone will be playing ridiculously high! [+o(]

The arrangement is all done with VSL, plus the PMI Baroque Organ.

And yes I know most of you might think the reverb is too low, hehe [:P] , it's more of my personal preference though.

    Cheers,
    Frankie

  • Nice! I liked your voice too.

    Best,

  • Your music is great, and (since I am not at my master room) the mix sounded full and well balanced. Not too dry, no extra reverb needed for my taste.

Your voice is very "Musical" style and I was stunned by the modulation. It sounded beautiful for me, like crossing in and out of european/eastern world borders.

But I would second your idea, that your composition, which sounds more "Opera" than "Musical" , needs a more opera style baritone.
But then again, the "border crossing" made me listening again and it has great charme.

But, I am Beckmesser'ing: I congrat you on the awards, fully justified, It is truly master style, both.

Too old for Rock n Roll. Too young for 9th symphonies. Wagner Lover, IRCAM Alumni. Double Bass player starting in low Es. I am where noise is music.
  • Very nice. I love the vocals. I would say that on the mix that the vocals and orchestra are equally present in the mix in terms of distance and brightness. I think the mix on the vocals is perfect but the orchestra sounds bright and very near to me. It's not so much the amount of reverb as a sense of scope. You can have a very short reverb that sets the orchestra in a more realistic space. Really enjoyed it.

  • Thanks so much for your kind words and comments! [[;)]]

On a side note, besides having a great library (VSL) to render the MMO, I have to credit Melodyne (!) big time if you found the vocals sound nice... [:O]ops: hehe

    Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,
    Frankie
