    Fixed the Forte issue.

    Still curious about V-Stack

I am curious on this as well - I have my Ram showing up here in 2 days (for all four slaves) and am hoping the .exe alteration from Mattias will do the trick with Vstack.

Vstack for me now has been rock solid and would love to keep it (since I am using SX, it all feels an looks similar - good for my small brain. [[;)]] )

Christian - did you try Mattias' fix for Vstack? Problems?

    Rob
Rob, I did hack the exe of V-Stack ages ago and it did work. However as it wasn't really deigned to work in that way I decided that it was a bit risky.

  • Thanks Daryl [:D]

  • Hi Rob.. no worky, worky here. It crashes when I hit the wall I usually hit.

But I haven't given up yet.

Anyway Brainspawn Fotre should be LMA un lext update. But who knows when that is.

What other chainer option are there, which are LMA?

[edit] Another question. The boot.ini change is just a safety net right?

Just to confirm, you have set the /3gig switch? You have made the exe file LAA? Have you checked it at all? If so, I can't see how it won't work as I managed to get sample loading well over 2Gb.

Can you use Forte and V-Stack at the same time? This way it won't matter whether either app is LAA.

The boot.ini change means that when you boot up you will be using the /3gig switch. Make sure that this is the boot that you use when you are sample loading.

Ah alright.. I misread the post. As if the ini change was a sefety net. That the real change was teh hack of the program. Trying again.

[edit] Yup that did the trick [:)] Wonderfull. Thanks Mattias and Daryl

  • My Machine still craps out before I use up all the memory that the VI says I have left. It says I have 400mb left, where before the switch I could load so much that at one point it said there were only 11MB left. What are your results?

Also when windows boots up, how much ram should it display. I beleive mine loads up 3700 - but it should be above 4000 no?

  • I thought Mattias mentioned something about ONLY putting 3 GB in the PC's (for now) - having 4 GB could actually perhaps cause some problems.

Mattias is 'rockin out' on a gig for the next day but will be back [[;)]]

(my ram should be here tomorrow - I'm putting 3 GB in 4 machines - just as soon as this is done - I'll make all the changes and report back - maybe tomorrow depending on the Ram's arrival.

How much memory does VI say you have with the switch compared to without?

Even when you have 4GB Windows will not see more than 3GB because you have no access to the other 1GB. If you look at the properties very carefully you'll see that between 3 and 4GB there is not much difference in the amount of memory that Windows will give you access to. Obviously with more memory you are not in danger of running out for Windows' essential services, but most of that last GB is actually wasted.

I never heard that [[:|]] I have 4GB in one machine and so far there are no problems apart from the fact that it loads 100MB more samples.

    Cool Daryl,

I think what I will do is wait until 64 bit comes out to buy another (4th - 1 gig stick) for these older PC's -( although, if you are getting another 100 MB with the 4th stick that sounds good.)

By that time RAM will be slightly cheaper and it just may be that with 64 bit - I'll want to put 4 x 2gig sticks (in the 4 slots) - total 8 gb ram.

Of course we don't know when it will truly be ready - with all software people supporting it with new drivers, but I have to think by Q1 2007.

64bit still won't help you use 8GB, although it should get you closer to the 4GB mark. I'm really trying to wait for Vista, although that may take until quite late next year. By that time using about 32GB RAM and 16 processor machines might just about do the trick. Just imagine how long that will take to load though [[:|]]

Of course by then MIR will be ready and I'll still need to get another machine (assuming that it sounds any good...!).

  • Interesting. I might just put in 3,5 giga in each then.

  • You know guys as I think of it - all but my last PC (just built) - I bet the older MOBO's will only support 4 GB [:'(]

Oh well, as I 'rotate' older PCs out I can up the Ram to the max the new MOBO will run.

a justified assumption ... you even have to dig deeper. consult your motherboard manual which RAM sticks are actually supported - there are differnences in the chip-layout (eg. number of pipes used) and the chipsets on your MOBOs sometimes support only a certain variety and combination of RAM-sticks.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Rob... by the time Vista is here your going to want new PC's anyway. So dont worry about it [:)]

Yeah, but in a much worse condition. Rock'n'roll life is much harder now than it was 20 years ago for some reason... [:D]

Should be out very soon, but 1.5 works great if you LAA-patch it as well.

    Hi Mattias -

    Hope the gig was fun.

Sorry about confusing the ram issue.

    I have 2 x 1 gig sticks going into two of the older PCs (make them a total of 2 x 1gig sticks PLUS 2 x 512 sticks = 3 gig Ram).

My newest Daw has the newer DDR2 - 667 Ram (currently 2 x 1gig sticks).
Unfortunately I ordered yesterday two of the 512 sticks of this.

Should I return those two 512 sticks and just get 2 x 1 gig stick of this DDR2 - 667 ram?

Let me know - not sure I can return it but worth a try.

    Thanks Mattias.
