  • Producing a HUGE Timpani / Gran Cassa Sound

    Hi all,

You know that Gigantic Led Zep / Jon Bonham "When The Levee Breaks" drum sound?

Well, the way you achieve that is by recording a "Room Mic" (placed many feet away from the drumset), and then slamming that RoomMic with a compressor.....then you mix that room-mic track in with the close-micked drums to taste....This gives you that huge ambience....like cannons.

So I was thinking of applying the same technique to Timps and Gran Cassa with a twist [;)]

    Here is the twist:

You have your untouched Timp channel. In addition you set up a buss that has the following plug-in chain:

    1) noise-gate

    2) Room IR (Westlake Studio Drum Room IR .....it's dense and not to long)

    3) L1 limiter to slam the Room IR

The twist is the noise gate....if set up correctly, the pp,mp, Timps will remain untouched, thereby retaining the natural dynamics of the Timpanis......however if you play the harder velocities of the Timps (mf, f, ff, fff) the noise gate on the buss opens , allowing the Timps to pass through the Room IR and then getting slammed by the L1....

    I think this will work.

PS: almost forgot.....naturally for everything to blend ....you should still have an Orchestral IR like Todd AO....smeared acrooss the whole thing.
