  • How to construct the elusive "John Barry" VI mat

How to construct the elusive "John Barry" VI matrix.....

Here is what I have done with great results:

The key is to place the legato Violins (03 VI-14 perf-leagato_sul) on the PARALLEL cell! Make sure it DOES NOT sustain......You are using this layer for legato connections only.....In "Edit Cell" set the envelope #'s to Attk-0, Dec-90, Sus-0, Rel-50

    Now here is the KEY!

3 vertical cells (in additoion to above mentioned parallel)

    1:1...09 VI-14 pfp_Vib_4s
    2:1...08 VI-14 pfp_Vib_2s
    3:1...02 VI-14_dyn-me_Vib_3s

Now set V-Span to CC1 (Mod wheel) with values 20% and 87%........at zero you now hear the 4s PFP, in the middle you here the 2s pfp, at the top the strong Decrecs finishing note........get it [;)]

Now try playing "Out of Africa" hi string line.......For the the first note, have Mod Wheel down at 0, on second note have mod wheel at 127 (full....but remember to have A/B select on B0-decresc)

Basically what I am doing is swelling (with PFPs) the first note, and DECRSCing the 2nd note, swelling the 3dnote, DECRESCing the 4th.......BUT I still have my legato joinings from the paralell layer...

It sounds complicated but it really worx great....

    PS:
for the 8th note parts leave wheel at 127 (in decrecs B0)

    hope this helps

Innovative - can you post a quick mp3 on this?

    Rob

  • Yes, it works really great to layer dynamic samples with the performance legati.
My favorite setups are different staked cells controlled via velocity control.
Soft velocity triggers pfp patches + performance legato hard velocity triggers fortepiano patch plus performance legati.

  • Rob, I am behind a firewall ...no can do ;-(

    later from home i will:

  • Looking forward to hearing it!

  • HERB,

You are right.....BUT the Leg patches need to NOT sustain, once PFP reach an audible level, as they are to "straight"

  • HERB,

You are right.....BUT the Leg patches need to NOT sustain, once PFP reach an audible level, as they are to "straight" and the dynamic of the pfp /decresc gets lost....

  • Christian....

    Why wait....just make it now

    SvK

  • I see, I simply balance the volumes of the two stacked cells when I do my setup to get the right mixing-effect I'd like to hear.

  • HERB yeah [;)]

  • HERB,

    almost forgot,

On the ADSRs of the 3 pfp cells,i increased the Attack time, so they don't get in the way of the PARALLEL legato joints [;)]

  • Please post the Preset file (.fxp) so we can quickly give this a try.

    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Where?

    SvK

  • Just Zip the preset file and upload it to the same place you would upload your mp3's. Then post a link to the zip file here.

    Best,
    Jay

  • Jay....where does one post .mp3s ??

    SvK

  • There is no official area on VSL for user uploads. Usually people have some space for uploads that is provided by their internet provider (e.g. AOL).

    Best,
    Jay

  • we have uploads on our schedule since ... ehhhm ... i can't even remember since when ... in case you have something to spread email it to me meanwhile and i'll transfer ot to your userfolder.

btw, just curious - what size (quota) would you find appropriate for uploads from registered users?

    christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • 50 MB's? That would fit about 10 high quality mp3's of about 3 minutes each. I think AOL offers about 25 MB's.

    Best,
    Jay

  • Hmm! That sounds intriguing, I'd really like to hear a sample of that constructed Barry sound. But wouldn't his style had something to do with HIS sound? No?

  • Yes, VSL definitely needs an area where we can post .fxp's as well as mp3's. Personally, I'm more interested in .fxp's and a midi file for that preset, that way we can here it in all it's glory (less memory usage for VSL) and we can see how the preset is being used, no guess work listening to the mp3.
