  • How to use OVERDRIVE BEND?

Hi! I'm Japanese user. Please teach me how to use PERFORMANCE TOOL with OVERDRIVE. And I'm sorry for my strange English.

I'm using VSL OVERDRIVE and stand alone PERFORMANCE TOOL with Kontakt 2 and Cubase SX 3.

I almost understood how to use Alternative Picking play and legato play. But I don't understand natural bend play.

One sample is written PERF-BEND. Should I use this sample with PERFORMANCE TOOL? But I don't know how to use this sample and what I use a tool preset.

    Please tell me. Yoroshiku!

  • Hello Tatsuya,

for the PERF-BENDs, you can use the Performance Tool with Legato settings if you take the EG_perf-bend patch (bank 2/prog 1). If there isn't an extra perf-bend.pal file, load the normal legato one into the channel.

The other bends (with no "perf" in the name) can be used normally, and EG_bend_all combines all half and whole tone up and down bends - you can control them with keyswitches (c1 - half tone, c#1 - whole tone) and the modwheel (0 up/127 down).

    Hope that helps,
    d.

  • Thank you for your reply.

Can I get the preset of PERFORMANCE BEND? I don't have it. I have only 1 normal legato preset.

I try to use EG_BEND ALL. It can make natural bend sound and I can control tone up and down sounds.
But I can't control beginning of bend. Bend length is fixed.

Can I change BEND starting point?

    Tatsuya

  • Hello Tatsuya,

You have to use EG_perf-bend to control the beginning of the bend. Load the legato preset into the Performance Tool channel (I just wasn't sure whether there was an extra preset for the bends - but if there isn't, the legato will do fine). The perf-bends also go up or down a half or whole tone, but you don't have to use keyswitches or modwheel to change between them.

If you use another track with sustained notes, you can also have a very long tone before you start the bend - read the Performance Tool manual for info on using the Legato "Ghost" keyswitch.

    regards,
    d.

  • Hello david,

Your reply helps me so much. Because there is no forum about VSL in japan.
OK, I must use EG_pref_bend if I want to control the beginning of the bend.
I try to use it with normal legato preset.
But I think it's better for me using EG_bend_all. I can get natural bend sound.
EG_perf_bend is a bit unnatural sound. Wrong way to use?

I must learn more about "Ghost" keyswitch.I don't know it yet.
English manual is too difficult for me. and German one is more...

I have many question, so I will come to this forum soon.
    Thanks again for your kindness.

    Tatsuya.

  • Hi Tatsuya,

    You're welcome!

The "ghost" key should be C1 for all Overdrive legatos. If you put it just before a note (maybe overlapping a bit), then this note will be muted - no sound. But the next note will play the bend from the muted note. So you can put a normal sustain (or other articulation) instead of the muted note on another track, and you will hear that note and the bend!

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask ... I'll try to answer them if I can.

    Kind regards,
    d.
