  • Hi Bill!

You are the first one that has found it. 😊 We will send out a newsletter a bit later.

  • This is terrific! It's quick and easy and it got rid of the old unnecessary VSL playback templates.

The Instrument Info field listing what instruments are included is very welcome!

What I would like to see added at some point would the ability for it to create corresponding VEPro Server instances along with the Dorico Playback Template.

Thank you, VSL, for continuing to make using your products easier to use and less user-error prone leaving me more time for music writing!

  • Really appreciative of the efforts you guys make to supply these.

On quick question, I know I asked this way back when the VSL for Dorico expression maps were first released, but I can't remember the answer. Why is there no expression map for any of the high Synchron Woodwinds? It seems the Synchron-ized Woodwinds ExMap is loaded instead.

Synchron - Woods, Brass, Perc I, Str Pro, Elite Str, Duality Str & Sordino, Prime Studio - Woods, Perc, Solo Str, Ch Str, Orch Str, App Str, Harps, Choir Studio Dim - Brass, Strings VE Pro, MIR Pro 3D, Vienna Suite Pro Cubase 14, Studio One 6, Dorico 5
  • Great that you all like our new tool!

@DaddyO: The preset structure of high Synchron Woodwinds and high SYNCHRON-ized Woodwinds is more or less the same. So the same expression map works for both libraries.

  • Would it be possible to design something similar for Sibelius?

  • Hi,

I found this tool yesterday with the latest update of V.A.

I tried it and it seemed to work, but then I couldn't figure out where to look for the templates to load them to Dorico.

The list of instrument libraries was also incomplete, unless I'm misunderstanding when it says "installed instruments".

I sent a message also about this. Hopefully someone can answer and guide me since I really like the idea of the tool.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

  • Templates you create will show up in the Apply Template screen in Dorico; you would select as you would with any other.

Only instruments you have installed will show up as available. BBO is not yet included, as there are no Dorico Exp maps for it.

  • Hello!

You can find an introduction to the Dorico Wizard and a tutorial including a list of supported libraries at the following links:
    https://www.vsl.co.at/en/News/Dorico
    https://www.vsl.info/en/tutorials/guides/dorico-integration/introduction
    https://www.vsl.info/en/tutorials/guides/dorico-integration/quickguide

@Oceanview: Sibelius playback configurations work differently. At the moment I cannot see any way to create something similar for Sibelius.

  • Hello!

Assuming I have setup VEPro with a server project of one or multiple instances (e.g. strings, brass etc. on an instance), can I anyhow tweak the playback template XML or its endpoint configuration XMLs so that it will open VEPro with the relevant instance instead (or assign it to the already opened instance) instead of opening a new instance of Synchron player?

So I am thinking of a (smaller) VEPro server project with instruments only, and a second one with instruments and choir/voices - both resulting in two different playback templates (VSL orchestra and VSL orchestra with voices).

Or is there a better way to integrate VEPro with the wizard, e.g. always manually switch the endpoint configuration?

That would be cool so that one could also always have the same VEPro settings/presets automatically assigned when starting new Dorico projects based on VSL wizard templates.

    Thanks and regards

  • Hi Andy Thank you for the very nice tool.

    Some issues I encountered:

    1. SY Strings Pro - The template loads the XF Sus presets but the expression maps have CC2 activated. So the template should either load the Velocity presets which I think is the preference or the expression maps should be changed.
    2. In most expression maps velocity and CC2 or CC1 are used however in the loaded SY player these CC are not activated. So you have to manually do this for all instruments. I am not sure if this activation might not be saved with the template as I mostly use my Synchron and Synchronized libraries through VEPro. There there is no issue all are preloaded with the CC activated.
    3. I have always understood that when you load a preset in the SY player for an instrument CC7 is set to balance the instrument in the full orchestra. For example SY Brass - Horn 1 is CC7 set to 67 while Trumpet 1 has CC7=90. Dorico has issues with this as it will reset CC7 to 100 when it starts playing. So in my template I have modified all my instruments to have CC3 instead of CC7 as master volume. In the Dorico wizard all loaded instruments are now set to CC7=100. Does this mean they are not balanced anymore?

  • Hello Mavros!

    Thanks for your feedback.

    1. The Dorico expression maps for Synchron Strings Pro have CC1 assigned as secondary dynamic. So it's correct that the VelXF sus presets get loaded.
    2. It's true that in some expression maps secondary dynamic is CC1 and in some it's CC2. However, the auto-assigned presets always should be in line with that setting. No manual setting should be necessary. If you think that you have found an instrument where this is wrong, please let me know the library and the instrument.
    3. You are right that our Master Volume levels are balanced and that the Dorico mixer removes that balance by sending CC7=100 to all instruments. Anyway, I would always newly balance the levels of all channels for every project. Our levels can only be a starting point and are not carved in stone.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi

Please find attached a screen shot of the Violins 1 Expression Map after a fresh load of generated playback template. As you can see it shows CC2 as secondary control and not CC1 as it should be. For Percussion it is correct it shows CC1 and also loads VelXF rolls Mod (as used in the EM)

Also attached one loaded instrument after the fresh load of the template. As you see CC2 is not activated. This is the case for all instruments woodwinds (CC2), brass (CC2( and percussion (CC1).

Just my opinion but if you have more than 30 instruments the pre-balancing of all instruments is a main time saver. If you have to adapt 30+ instruments each time you start a project the whole point of a template would be lost. Worse in Dorico it sets back CC7 each time you start playback. This is why I assigned CC3 to CC7 in all my templates. The only other option is to write automation for CC7 from the first note in your template which is rather uncommon. I normally only use CC7 to balance between instruments like you do in the SY player but also between different library providers.

Here's a screenshot of the Synchron Strings Pro Violins 1 expression map on my system:

As you can see, for me it has CC1 and not CC2 like yours. This seems strange that yours does not match. This is in a new score that I've just made.

Maybe you made some edits to the copy of the expression map in this Dorico file? What happens if you press the "Reset to Library Defaults" button at the bottom to reset the copy of the expression map in the Dorico file to match the system default?

  • Hello Mavros!

As mducharme has already pointed out, the expression map in your screenshot must have been modified. The Synchron Strings Pro expression maps that come with our Dorico Wizard have CC1 assigned as secondary dynamic. Please note that expression maps gets saved with your project. So if you load a project, the expression maps inside will stay as they have been before a fresh installation.

I'm not sure which instrument you are showing in your second screenshot, but it's true that Synchron Woodwinds, SYNCHRON-ized Woodwinds and Synchron Brass work with CC2 as secondary dynamic and Synchron Percussion works with CC1 as secondary dynamic. That's no mistake. The auto-assigned presets are in line with this setting of the expression maps.

  • Thanks that solved the issue and corrected a misconception I had relating the EM management by playback templates in Dorico.

I indeed did not start with a new project. I took an existing full functioning project using the SY libraries in VEPro with my own EMs, switched to the Silence template and then to your wizard generated template but that apparently does not replace already existing EMs. If I start with a new project with the Silence template and then switch to the new wizard generated on it work correctly.

Also a misconception regarding the second screenshot. I always put the Vel.-XF button on On for instruments with CC2 as secondary control but that is not necessary to generate the CC2 lane in Dorico.

    Many thanks. One keeps learning.

  • Does the playback template for the new solo strings include added playing/playback techniques for the extended articulations in the library?

  • Hello Bill!

Only the Dorico default playing techniques and playback techniques plus some custom crescendos are used in the expression maps for Synchron Solo Strings.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Thanks Andi. I don't suppose there's a handy list of which P/P map to which articulations?

    Cheers,

    Bill
