I'm hoping that this new compressed format might also lead to a mic merge feature, which would be a very welcome development to reduce the system load of the VSL libraries. That and a "niente" feature are the only things that I feel are really missing from the Synchron Player as it stands.

EDIT: Actually, detailed custom response curves in the other players would be nice too - right now only the Synchron Piano player has this in full. The main Synchron player just has these postage-stamp-size curve editors.

partly also because you cannot freely choose the microphone positions to use like with OT's Sine

When installing a library you can choose which mics should be installed / not installed.

And yes, more Synchron libraries will get the compressed treatment, but we have to keep an eye on our download capacity. Stay tuned.

    Ben,

I appreciate that for download bandwidth limitations the rollout may have to be trickled BUT can you please give us an answer about what will/won’t be ‘converted’ to the lossless compression?

As I understand it: anything that is not ‘synchronized’ yet has significant conversion issues; and, anything that is either a synchron or a ‘synchronized’ library can take advantage of the lossless compression.

    Synchron/BBO: Yes

    SYNCHRON-ized: Not yet decided

    VI: No

OK -- sounds like good news. Apologies if I've misunderstood about the flexibility to install the microphones as desired -- my memory must be playing tricks on me!

  • Just a heads up that the Synchron Percussion is now available for update to lossless compression.

  • In my case, it did not yet update all of Synchron Percussion, only Bells III.

It initially listed all my percussion, but didn't end up updating all of them. Maybe there's a download limit per day?

Just one small Orch Perch updated today... Andi?

  • Hello!

We have put some files online a bit too soon. Please have a little more patience.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Less space without loss of quality would indeed be very welcome. Each time I buy a new VSL library (last SY Violin and Cello) I have to move some not so often used libraries to my external SSD.

I have just started to move some from a full 4Tb SSD to another!

  • It looks like the percussion has suddenly gone on sale, perhaps related to this and the availability of the Dorico templates.

Quite a different for the Synchron Percussion products. Down to ~430 GB from 1.1TB! 😊

PS: More info and updated product details will follow through the afternoon.

  • Great Andreas now I have room for the full version.

  • Could it be that when updating SY Percussion I/II/III std to become lossless, the old files become purgeable but are not deleted at the end of the installation session?

In theory I have created a lot of space but from the 340 GB free 309 GB are designated as purgeable. Before the updating section the I only had a few GB of TimeMachine snapshots which I usually delete from time using the terminal. I have already restarted several times and also a shutdown and restart.

The result is that I cannot install the full version I just purchased as your installer takes purgeable space as "used" . My OS is Sonoma 14.5

  • After deleting all my TimeMachine snapshots I created enough real free space to continue the installation of the remaining additional mics (10 packages about 100 GB) of the percussion library.

Although the VSL Assistant will not start the installation if there is not enough real (so total free - purgeable) free space for the download + the installed library + some reserve available it does use the purgeable space during installation:

    • I started with 340 GB free of which 309 GB purgeable where I could not install a further additional mics package
    • After deleting the TimeMachine snapshots the purgeable was reduced to 285 GB purgeable and I could install packages one-by-one
    • After installing the 10 packages I now have 241 GB free with only 1.98 GB purgeable.

So overall the remains free space seems correct and the purgeable file space has been used. How the purgeable space became so high during the updates of the standard version, which I assume overwrite existing sample files with the new smaller ones, might be investigated.

I'd just as soon not post a new thread, this is close enough a topic.
So after buying a percussion library in the current sale, all my Synchron Percussion wants to be updated.
but I haven't seen notes on most of it saying what the update does; what I have seen is years ago. Do they really require an update to work properly? Unfortunately where I live at the moment provides wifi but it's throttled, with a ceiling of around 650kps.

What I need to know is, for example Synchron Cymbals and Gongs II is 30 GB install size; does the update require I have that much space available? Because I don't have enough for more than a couple like this. As an experiment I clicked on update for all of what's indicated to need an update and by the time I chose Synchron Harps, a size in megabytes, it balked saying there wasn't enough space to download. Initially the target was the default downloads directory on my system drive and it definitely has enough space, but no which is weird.

I can see why the next target, my external samples drive, wouldn't, because the Synchron Percussion things if they have to install in full have wiped out the space.

Probably doing it one at a time (my normal M.O.) will work as I suppose the old files vanish. So are those overwritten during installation in a way that doesn't require I've reserved all that space, or what? Forgive my naivety.

    what the update does

The updates for Synchron Percussion are to shrink the size to around 1/4 or 1/3 of the original size via lossless compression. If you don't want to make the libraries smaller so that you have more disk space than before, you don't have to update.
