    Hi,

Question to VSL - without giving away any secrets - if at some point in the future a Full orchestral package is upgraded to a symphonic cube (When available) will existing songs realised with the Pro edition(in Logic) load and play or will the instruments not be found if the Symphonic Cube has replaced the old VSL library on the host computer rather than supplemented it? I ask this as due to Archiving limitations it is not always possible for me to save every song as a project with the associated VST samples/programmes.

    Thanks

    Julian

  • I'm not the expert but it seems to me that logically speaking (ahem) you don't need to save samples with your project (unless you modified them for that project), in which case the logic file will load the instrument files you have set up, which wouldn't change if the library itself was expanded - you'd just have a whole lot of new instrument files but the old ones would keep their names.

  • Yes that's the point! Currently there is no need to save either instrument, or sample files as long as they aren't edited and remain on the host computer (I'm assuming any archived song is reloaded on the same computer) So the question remains will upgrading to a Symphonic Cube at some point in the future mean that the original instrument and sample files now have different names or no longer exist - I'm also making the assumption that the original library is not retained on the computer but rather replaced by the new one.

I realise it can be premature to discuss issues about a yet to be released product but as it has repercussions over how current projects should be archived it's a fair topic!

If someone at VSL has the answers or guidance on this matter it would be appreciated.

    thanks

    Julian

  • That's a good question. I have absolutely no official information about this but it would seem logical that the samples included in the existing products (be it the Orchestral Package or Horizon libraries) would be included as is except that the Cube is likely a 24 bit library and the samples might be organized so that for example the French Oboe samples are with the Pro Edition woodwind samples instead of being in separate directories. This would mean that loading an old template would require searching for the samples (the first time the old template is loaded) and also need 1,5 times the memory it needed with the Pro Edition (16 bit samples versus 24 bit samples). I'm not sure about the memory requirements, though. Do 24 bit samples require more memory than 16 samples? Atleast disc performance is affected.

Just speculating for fun. I might be totally wrong with this. [[;)]]

  • Although I beleive "Cube" is just a marketing term. The symphonic cube although its ships on hard disk is likely to be the "source" material - i.e you will install from the HD instead of 10s of DVDs (I'm sure I read something about this earlier).

So you can probably put your samples where you like - assuming they have the same name - which I can't see why VSL would change the names, even if it is going to be 24bit rather than 16.

  • Ok now I see what you're talking about - got confused [*-)]

anyway, 24 bit VSL should be simply awesome. Weren't they recorded in 96khz as well? That would mean a future upgrade when computers are *significantly* faster than they are now...?? 24bit 96k VSL! [[:|]]

    Miklos.

  • Why if it comes on HD would you ever want to move the samples? Instruments maybe, but why look a gift horse in the mouth. I would assume that if a HD is supplied, then the samples will already be expanded and in place, otherwise it defeats the object. You can of course move your samples to wherever you want them.

  • I think julian's question is that does the Pro Edition still have to be installed after the Cube is installed just to be able to load some old projects. The Pro Edition is 250 gigs or something so most likely he has a valid use for the space it requires. [8-)]

  • Precisely!

Also good practice would require the transfer of any external hard disc "master" ie "Symphonic Cube" to a second disc in case the original hard disc crashed so system disc space would still be an issue.

I would transfer the samples anyway. If the hard drive fails (and they sometime do, even on Macs!) you have no back-up. Of course I'm sure that VSL would help with the replacement, but just think of the downtime; not worth it in my book.
