  • Using Multiple VEP Instances (> 16 Instruments) In Finale And Cubase

I am currently using VEP 7 with Finale V26 and with Cubase Pro 10.5 (on an iMacPro)

I have been using one Instance (with 16 Instruments) in both programs

But now I need to use more than 16 active connected instruments, and have no idea how to do this in either Finale or Cubase

Is there a step-by-step setup procedure for either or both of these programs.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated

    Hi Dave,

In Cubase, you can insert VE Pro as VST3 plug-in, which will provide your with multiple MIDI Ports (with 16 MIDI Channels each).

In Finale, You will want to insert another VE Pro plug-in and open a new VE Pro instance (just like you opened the first one) to access another 16 MIDI channels.

    Best,
    Paul

Hi Paul, Thank You Very Much For Your Response

iMac Pro, VEP 7 For Mac , Finale v26 Latest Update

In Cubase, I Did The Following And Was Successful ... Open VEP Server > Open Cubase > Use Rack To Open 3 VEP Icons (Called An Instance, Player, Or Instrument ???) > Create Midi Track To Open VEP Plug-In Connection Boxes For Each One > Connect Each One To A New Instance > Raise Each Instance > Add Instruments;  All VEP Server Instances And VEP Keyboard Play Back

If I Use The Above Server & Instances (Created In Cubase), In Finale They Will All Play Simultaneously From VEP Keyboard And Score

In Finale, I Did The Following And Was Unsuccessful ... Open VEP Server > Open Finale (Create Score Etc.) > Use Audio Units Banks & Effects To Select 3 VEP Icons (Called An Instance, Player, Or Instrument ???) > Edit (Pencil) To Open VEP Plug-In Connection Boxes For Each One > Connect Each One To A New Instance > Raise To Display 3 New Plugged  And Connected Instances (Routed To Bank 1, Bank 2, Bank 3 For Both Finale Score Manger And VEP Instrument Channels) > Add Instruments To Banks;  (Checked All Banks And Channels For Consistency)

    Finale Result

All Instances Are Playable On VEP7 Keyboard

Only Instance 1 (Bank 1-16) Plays Back From Score

When Selected, Bank 2 (17-32) And Bank 3 (33-48) Instances Do Not Play Back

Adding Tracks Beyond Track 16 To A VEP Instance Will Not Play Back

There Are no Numbered Instruments Above 16

I CAN ONLY ASSUME THE PROBLEM IS IN THE BANK CHANNEL NUMBERS

Any Assistance Would Be Very Much Appreciated,  Paul

  • Hello Dave!

Finale labels the channels on instrument bank 2 as channels 17-32, but in fact they are channels 1-16. The MIDI standard doesn't offer the possibility to use more than 16 channels on one MIDI port. In the Finale Score Manager the channels get labeled from 1-16 regardless of the bank the instrument is loaded on.

So to trigger more than 16 channels with Finale, please proceed as follows:

    - Start Vienna Ensemble Pro Server (64-bit).
    - In Finale assign the Vienna Ensemble Pro plugin to Bank 1 AND Bank 2.
    - Connect the plugins to the VE Pro Server.
    - In the two Vienna Ensemble Pro instances add your instruments. Leave the MIDI port setting in both instances at "All" or "1".
    - Make sure to set the same channels in the Finale Score Manager and in your Vienna Ensemble Pro instances.

    Best regards,
    Andi

    Thank you Andreas

Your solution was to leave the port settings at 1 for all instances, in both the VEP Instances and in Score Manager  ... I had erroneously changed them to match the Finale Bank Numbers 2, 3, 4, etc.  Everything works fine in Finale and Cubase now.

I really have to thank you and Paul for the reliably rapid responses to customers like me. I am amazed that you are able to respond so quickly.

    Thanks Again, Andreas,😃
