  • the rush... new concept album demo

    Dear forum members,

I've recently started work on my third concept album. After writing about wastelands and nightmares, now I'm into rushes (of all kinds!).

My main goal is to build upon my expirience with synths and to learn the VSL way of indexing samples by using the Overdrive Guitar.
I'm trying to get a raw, dirty sound. Psychotic, dark, menacing.

Check out this link for the first demo, in it's third incarnation (and not nearly finished)!

I;m curious to what you think of it. If it's interesting.

    Instrumentation:
    --VSL Opus percussion
    --VSL FX Percussion
    --DX 11
    --Mini Moog
    --Worra's Prophet
    --VSL Overdrive Guitar
--Yamaha Drum Kit from Sonic Implants
    --Custom Made samples

(Currently I'm recording lots of own samples to use, like various stones, glasses, metallic hits, etc)
    Thanks in advance!

  • weslldeckers, what reverb are you using? Sounds like a room reverb (?) Maybe something longer/wetter would lush it up a bit..

  • For this workprint, I used one smallroom GigaPulse... and sent everything through it. I was suprised at the resultant stereoseparation, altough that probably comes from the settings in Sibelius which I haven't adjusted yet.

The next incarnation should be more properly mixed...

And, for the record: in this version I haven't used my own recorded samples yet, but I did use a Yamaha drum kit from Sonic Implants.

  • You use the english word "rush" -- you know it has several meanings, right?

    Reed, or wetlands grass.

    Hurry.

Exalted or exaggerated sensation, like a drug high.

    Fraternity/sorority cattle call.

probably more too (and probably a well-defined music genre that I don't know anything about) ...

with mostly rhythmic music, the rather constant pulse might be changed from time to time? The overall effect, for me, was not that successful; and I can be swayed by pure rhythm. But it's pretty far afield from the normal listen for me, so who knows? Good luck as you work it out!

  • Hello Gugiel,
please explain pulse as I find myself to be confused with the meaning of the term. You probably do not mean meter (changes) but the constant beat?

Usually I have difficulties getting the English terms translated to their Dutch counterparts (if they have one), and now I can't be sure about the exact meaning of pulse.

    Thank you!

  • yes, i meant constant beat ... Chopin expected it to vary (we think), Carter demands that it change in structurally significant ways.
