  • One of my first VSL efforts..

It's led by the piano really, Sampletekk's White Grand, but Opus 1 features all the way through too, mostly cellos and basses. Per at Sampletekk has asked if he can use it as a demo, which is nice!

More efforts at http://www.irvinduguid.com/orig_music.html but not all are orchestral.

    Comments welcome

  • Nicely done. Very suspenseful sound to it.

  • Nice piano work. But perhaps the strings could be passd through a bigger reverb. Nice piece though. Reminiscent of Jerry Goldsmiths score for "The Haunting".

Really good music. I especially liked Distrust and Carrion. I liked Lucifer too.

It would be interesting to hear Lucifer go in a more symphonic direction in the second half. I'm a progressive rock fan too so I really like what you did. Just suggesting an alternate arrangement with more VSL instruments and then maybe add the synth in a more subtle way.

  • It's a nice, sad and lonely piece. And even tragically romantic. It's got a great feeling of nostalgia.

Maybe that there could've been a little more variation in the short string notes, or some more accents to make them more 'duelling' with the melody.

    Very very pretty!

  • 2070: I doubt music will sound like this in 2070... but it sure is funky! Could be cool for a chase of some kind. Nice piece of action. Should be for some compagny with library music.

Lucifer: doesn't sound tremendously original... but very decent. Classy. I could picture it accompany-ing one of the BBC detective/crime series like Silent Witness. Hey, I like the synthesizer which plays such an emotional part in the second minute: what is that?
Altough they're perfect for the piece, the drums make it a little too much librarymusic-lke and 'cheapen' the dramatic content to that of a lesser detective series. But that's just me I guess...

Sculpted Ambience: sound too much like general library music in that it doesn't really do much. It's ambient for sure. Nothing bad. Just not my taste. It does illustrate your versatality.
The scraping at the end is a great touch, btw!

Carrion's Theme: hey, another mocking detective theme! Playful yet sad. Evil in a nice way. Remniscent of The Addams Family from 35 seconds onwards... With just over one minute maybe a bit short. I'd like some more devollopment. Perfect for a series main title.

Bray of Thunder: this is my style. More agressive. With lots of playful moments. Climax could've been somewhat stronger maybe. I imagine this for a cartoon...

MW Groove: short, but very groovy. upbeat, funky, funny. If it were on a library music CD, I'd certainly use it for one of the tv programs I edit. Too bad you fade it out at 52 secs... I want more!

all in all: cool works! thumbs up!

  • Thanks all for your comments and suggestions, it's interesting getting other musician's perspectives.

@hetoreyn: Never seen The Haunting, but might look out for it now! Good reverb idea..

@cug: I do have a tendecy to go a bit 'prog' sometimes, but I like the mix of orchestral and rock instruments, and it's also quicker for me than programming VSL...!

@weslldeckers: The synth in Lucifer is a Triton combi patch programmed specifically for that track, it has some synth and strings, and maybe some other stuff, can't remember! The scraping at the end of Sculpted ambience is me messing around with a Sculpture (Logic) patch. It is a boring piece this, but as you guessed it's only there to show some versatility. MW groove was produced with the same thought, and not my favourite, just there for something different!

All 7 tunes were produced between May and August this year, although Carrion and Lucifer were written (ie. composed) earlier. I've written a lot more than that this year, with a couple more almost completed within the last 2 weeks, and I would certainly consider producing for library music at some point, or licensing existing material.

Again, thanks for the thoughts and comments, and for taking the time to listen!

    Best wishes,

    Irvin
