  • Recommend CPU, RAM, motherboard for "economical" 64GB slave build

Hi everyone, I'm running a 32Gb Dell XPS 15 7590 for my DAW and some VEP instances (mostly non-VIP, i.e. EWQL Wordbuilder SATB instances, Voices of Passion, and some Synchron). I'm going to up the RAM to 64GB (Symphonic Choirs seems to take up a boatload of RAM when not streaming from disk).

I'm running 2 slaves, both 16GB, both older, i5 and i7. Both of the slaves are running only VIP in VEP. They both work fine for now, but my template is getting large and I'm going to incorporate MIR Pro and Vienna Suite Pro very soon.

I want to replace the 2 slaves with one modern home-built desktop with 64Gb (upgradable to 128-256), with an appropriate CPU and motherboard, strictly for VEP/VIP/MIR Pro use.

As I've not built a computer for 7-8 years, I don't have the time to spend doing tons of research, and even if I did, I'd rather get some solid opinions from the experts (you guys) who have built modern boxes for VSL use.

To that end, could I please ask for some solid CPU, motherboard, RAM (and anything else you feel is crucial) recommendations, given I'd like, if possible, to spend no more than $2,500 Cdn?

Are these new "NUC" mini-boxes worth considering? I'd like to go fanless if possible, as the fans always get too loud after a few years of use, even with cleaning.

    Thanks kindly for your help:)

    Shawn

  • I'm 100% Mac for VEP but here's another resource for you.  I would suggest taking a look at the Fully Silent PC site, which has lots of great info on what goes into building high performance fully silent machines.  https://www.fullysilentpcs.com/   I can tell you that Matt is a low-key great guy who could certainly spec a fanless machine for your needs (there's a good bit that goes into it to manage heat).  He recently helped me in configuring a Ryzen 7 3700X based fanless machine with 128GB ram, 1TB EVO SSD, etc.    Good luck!

  • Thanks very much karma3. This is definitely helpful. A quick run-through, without even communicating with him (I will speak with him, of course) and I'm just under $2K (USD, I suppose).

    Thanks for the resource:)
