    Hi,

    With MIR, one should choose the instrument profile matching the instrument to which the icon corresponds.

    With Dimension Strings, it is common to mix and match players to for an ensemble. So, you might have an ensemble made of P1 and P3 (1st desk), P5 and P7 (2nd desk), P4 and P8 (3rd desk), and so on.

    When in MIRx mode, it is very handy to use the preset placement of each icon. So, it would be quick to apply the instrument profiles in subsequent order. So, in the example above players and profiles would be matched this way:

    (P1-profil P1) (P3-profil P2) (P5-profil P3) (P7-profil P4) (P4-profil P5) (P8-profil P6)

    The alternative would be to match each player with the corresponding profile, and adjust everything by hand.

    Now, this is the result of the two alternatives. Do you think they sound different? I'm sure I hear some slight difference in the end of the reverb tail, and maybe some diffent clarity, but I'm sure it is psychoacustics in action.

  • What I hear is a distiinction without a difference, two performances that are not identical -- but I can't put into words what's really different about them. 

    If pressed for an answer, I prefer B. It might have more depth, and the pan seems a little wider and looser, which I consider to be a good thing, or at least, a common phenomena: when eight seperate players are in unison, sooner or later someone will play a little louder than someone else. Even with the uniformity of the Dimension String library, I hear this at times, a very subtle moment of imperfect perfection. I suspect the second method's division of players one by one could highlight this. 

    Or, as you note, I *think* I hear it, as ears must pass through the brain before sound is heard, and all brains have filters, assumptions, expectations. 

    In any case, if they are not easily distinguished in this exposed context, without accompaniment, the matter would be even more obscure with more instruments.

    As such, this may be a workflow decision more than a matter of sound.

    Yes, probably the difference (if any) is so subtle that considerations on the workflow should prevail.

  • On a second thought: since the position of the icons in MIR is fixed, once for ever, it might be better to match them to the correct source instruments. You will be sure the results will be the expected ones. All considered, you will have to move them to the optimal position in any case.
