  • Somebody can improve my programmation?

    Hi VSL users,

I did a little melody with the STRINGS package.....
But I'm not very happy of the result...

    It's too synthetic for me....
You don't feel the musicians....the attacks...and so on..

I think my programmation is not good...or can be improve...

Somebody can hep me? or show me the right way?

    Here is the files :

    http://pitsmusic.free.fr/VSL/result.mp3
    http://pitsmusic.free.fr/VSL/midiFile.mid
    http://pitsmusic.free.fr/VSL/cubaseFile.cpr

The melody is played very fastly....220 bpm...
You need to feel the attacks on the chords....
The melody has to sound very heavy!!!

I Follow the tutorial of Beat.
So I use only one instrument => VI-14_mv-sffz

The result is not too bad....but not very realistic...

    I wait your propositions!
If you wish to send me files use this adress : fredericpecqueur@aol.com

    Thanks in advance!
    Fred.

PS: for information I have the STRINGS , the PERFORMANCE SET and CHAMBER STRINGS PACKAGE.

  • I’m sorry but my answer is not the answer you like (i guess).
The correct answer is veeeery long.
Its almost impossible to make VSL sound any better than other sample instrument libraries if you don’t know a fair amount of instrumentation. Its even worst than that, you also have to know a lot about how different instruments makes a musical phrase, how they articulate a musical phrase.
Your small except doesn’t sound that bad but no violin ensemble would play it like that. There is no musical dynamics, phrasing or movement in your example, its some notes played at the same velocity with hardly any brakes between notes (remember a violinist has to move the bow sometimes).
I’m not trying to be condescending here, far from, I’m just saying try to figure out what an actual human being ( a violin player) would do and learn more about classical instrumentation, this is im sorry to say the loooong answer.
ansver is not the answer you like (i guess).

  • Thanks for your response...

I already know all this things....
I use the VSL since a little moment now....
But for the fast melody....I don't know how to do... [:(]

Maybe somebody can show me the right way....

I think there are a technic for fast melody like this one...

The beat's tricks are already useful...and it's a good start....
But I don't find the way to obtain the same result than him..

  • I think you misunderstood Beat.He didn't say that you only should use sfz samples for fast strings.Like i remember he said you should use stac-1 and stac-2 up and downbows. But because only using stac-1 and stac-2 could sound boring and still a little to unreal,Beat said you should use the sfz samples for the important notes too. That could mean: 1.note sfz 2.note stac-1 3.note stac-2 .I think if you could find more articulations that sound good together you could let it sound more real.So you could try to mix the sfz and the stac-1 and stac-2 samples with legato samples together. For example 1.note sfz 2.note stac-1 3.note stac-2 4. and 5. note legato.if you don't get a good result you should read Beat's fast strings tutorial again, there are a few examples for a few situations.I hope i could help you.

  • Thanks for your answer santa maria.

The problem with the stac1 & stac2 is that the sound is to short....

    So I can't use them...

  • Yes It's better!!

I tested with the staccato and it sounds better...

Beat if you are somewhere in the forum....

Can you tell me what is the best combination??

    SFZ - stac1 - stac2 - sfz - stac1 - stac 2....

I would like to have your personal opinion! [:D]

  • i'm sorry i'm not beat, but maybe i can help you too.
my personal opiinion is you should play it like this :

    sfz-stac 1-legato

  • I didn't say that Santa Maria [[;)]]
    You opinion is also interesting!!

I'm going to try your solution!

  • The best advice I can give is to keep trying different combos until you find the right sound. It's rare that you would use the same articulation in a phrase like that....

    -BW

  • Ok! thanks!!

    other advices?

  • Are you using the alternation tool?

    -BW

  • No...I prefer used several tracks in cubase...

    why??

  • Change the bowing for starters. I'm a violin player and I would bow it the following way:

three short notes legato downbow (so just legato in VSL, the direction doesn't matter)
long upbow (propably the 0'5 violins will do)
    three short notes legato downbow
    long upbow
    two short notes legato downbow
    long upbow

Repeat 4 times and another 4 times one octave higher.

Put staccato note in the beginning of every row in my bowing instructions. It should be relatively quiet so it doesn't sound like a separate note but an aggressive start for the legato / detache note.

  • Thanks janila for your answer!!

I'm going to try this also!

I should try to learn violin!! It will be easier to do my programmation. [[;)]]

It's easier and faster to use the alternation tool for different articulations...

    -bw

  • ok! But I prefer to create several tracks.....it's more "natural" for me [[;)]]

  • other ideas? [:D]

  • Show us how you have progressed.

  • I have to improve several little things......

I will post something very soon....

I would like to say " A BIG THANK YOU" to Beat Kauffman....

    Your help is very useful!!!

    Thanks Beat!
