  • i'm being bowled over by Altiverb 5 right now too..

if MIR is going to be a collab between Audioease and VSL.. will the altiverb 5 owning customers be looked after in a cross grade price or something.

this decision would dramatically influence my purchase of MIR [:D] ..

    hopefully

  • I suppose on the "master tail" the predelay/early reflections are disabled. Just now setting up a new master template and I want to do right. both sound okay to me but in context I am guessing that using two sets of early reflections will cause phasing.

  • That's a bit of a technical question really, yes you do have to be careful of phasing sometimes with the mix setups using altiverb because you can accidentally leave two direct gains on, and even IR processed direct gain signals mixed with non-direct gain signals, I have noticed produce phasing effects. The answer is yes and no because the stage placement tool places the direct setting at 0db (normal), with the early reflections of course changable. The master tail verb is getting the output of the early reflections reverb, so technically, it's not a dry mix, it's wet, and it is adding early reflections to that, not the original. Even the direct mix is an IR direct mix, which means it's the sound of the direct signal as processed by the IR, so it's not dry. All early reflections settings should be set to 100% wet. The altiverb website recommends turning down early reflections to around -10 - -30 db for the master tail but I see they don't disable this altogether in the settings. I think this is to provide some kind of perceptive continuity between the sounds being mixed together by the master verb.I suppose the bottom line is use your ears for that part.

I tried to explain this several times already, so I repeat it just for the sake of completeness, as the quoted message is an old one: The MIR is a collaboration between AudioEase and the VSL only insofar that we got them to develop a dedicated convolution-engine for our concept. We are very happy about this, but neither is the MIR an AltiVerb in disguise (or vice versa), nor are there any plans for cross-/side-/up-grades.

    Kind regards,

  • hehe - at the time it looked like you were releasing MIR at the end of 2005... woa [:)]

2006 would be nice, and hopefully soon (although this does seem unlikely)

  • When Royalty is late, one doesn't complain. One is gracious they will be arriving at all. [:)]

  • .... sigh .... what can I say. Computers are hardly fast enough for our needs, even today, so a later MIR means a faster (read: actually usable) MIR.

    /Dietz - Vienna Symphonic Library
  • hehe - quite insane when you think about it!...

You considered releasing a MIR lite with an upgrade path to the full MIR ones computers can take it?

  • The upside is that altiverb is still "new" technology until then [:)]

  • Indeed, and i'll surely be trying it out. I would however prefere a VSL alternative based on MIR, which could then be upgraded at a later date to a more complete version. However its a possibility that VSL has agreed in their contracts with Audioease not to be direct competition, and release MIR as a more standard convolution.

  • That's like asking the queen to make her appearance half dressed in her underwear. It's just disrespectful... [H]

  • Dietz, it's occured to me that most users would have more than one library at their disposal, as VSL hasn't as yet, covered the many configurations required in the marketplace. (Jazz, Synth, and i'll reluctantly add, hiphop, trance, etc...)

Will MIR be capable of hosting other libraries too?

A second question. As you know, i'm considering the switch to Nuendo, and i've been interested in the Euphonix controller (MC5).
Given what seems the high level of integration between Nuendo and the MC5 using the EuCon spec, can MIR respond to a physical controller like the MC5, and if so, how well will it integrate with Nuendo, for example? Are there plans to code the Eucon spec, or similar code into MIR to enable external manipulation? Will a network system, i.e., Euphonix router, Madi cards, Gigabit Ethernet switch, etc., increase the chance of MIR functioning without pushing system limits?

And can MIR be installed across more than one PC, utilising Gigabit Ethernet, Madi etc, to spread the CPU/RAM load, and potentially help push the convolution load closer to live output, with less reliance on offline due to hardware limitations?
(CM's a LOT cleverer than i am when i comes to computer stuff, so i'd be surprised he hasn't already thought of or tried this.[H])

I appreciate you're being a little circumspect about the package. It's just information like this, with a long lead in time before release would help me, and maybe others, to plan ahead.

    Regards,

    Alex.

  • MIR will handle other libraries to, but without many of the advanced features which the VI will have.

  • Super!

  • oh - and I like queens in underwear [;)]

  • You speak words of wisdom my friend.

  • you may like queens in underwear, but for me, for my own protection, I wear these: [H] and that's The queen who is not A queen, at least, we hope not, or else all of us shall feel decidedly decieved. William on the other hand.... doubtful maybe, possible definitely
