Microphone Position Konzerthaus Vienna

Hi,

I'm not sure if this was already covered somewhere: 

Why is the conductor mic position in the Konzerthaus (Großer Saal) off center? Is it because of the sweetspot at the seventh row that is offcenter and it's better to keep all mic position in one line? Would be the only acceptable reason for that. :) 

Does it alter the sound when I change the microphone position to the center? Is more processing power needed, when the mic position is not at the spot where it was recorded? 

I'm still a kind of MIR noob... ;)

Hi Michael, 

Good question! 

The 7th row is the "classic" mic position in the "Großer Saal", the slightly off-center position is great for a balanced sound. 

If you move the microphone, the new position will be adapted (extrapolated), you will hear the effect if you reposition the microphones in extreme positions more clearly. Like with all impulses and repositioning, this is done once and does not take additional processing power when MIR PRO is playing.

One might add that there is a reason why the architects of Vienna Konzerthaus didn't plan for audience seats in the middle axis of Großer Saal: Like in many highly symmetrical rooms this is an area where some distinct reflections and resonances get audible. For obvious reasons we tried to avoid to capture those acoustic peculiarities with our impulse responses, too.

If you want to achieve "perfect" symmetry in your mixes you can always move the microphones to other positions in MIR Pro. Mind you, this won't trigger the selection of different IRs, it's "just" the Ambisonics decoding that will change.
