After installing SSD drives in my VSL computer, I was not only astonished to see how fast large ensembles load, but was also surprised to see that the total amount of memory being used is far less than with the traditional hard drives. I understand how SSDs load much faster, but I don't understand why the memory usage should be so much reduced, allowing me to add even more instruments if need be.

Can anybody tell me why this is so?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

  • Hi Jerry,

As SSD drives have very fast access times, you only load a very small first part of the sample into your RAM (you can define the size by adjusting the PRELOAD SIZE in the Directory Manager). This way you get faster load times and less RAM consumption with Vienna Instruments PRO (up to 10 times faster, using only 1/10th ot the RAM you'd need with slower harddrives).

    Best,

This is great, instead of waiting 25 minutes to load an ensemble it's loading in less than 3 minutes and I went from 88% memory usage to 25%!
