  • Steinberg new notation software "Dorico" and VSL, is a wedding announced ?

    Hello

Is Dorico going to be able to use VSL instruments ?

Reading the specs they talk of handling only 8 articulations ! (I hope I got it wrong )

    Best

  • Doing more reading, the Cubase Expression Maps could be imported in Dorico ! to be checked !

  • It seems to include 8 standard articulations, yes. That doesn't have to mean that you will be able to only use 8 patches of VSL. It's got to do with the notation side of things. But it probably means a lot of special types of articulations will come in an update.

  • Just got a mail from Steinberg.

220 different "playing technique " will be availlable

I have been hopeful that Dorico will eventually completely obviate the need for using a DAW. However I have been discouraged by the inattention of the Dorico team to playback features. I will be anxiously awaiting reports from users.

  • It's not inattention, it's a matter of time.

  • There is a new message saying that Dorico will not use any expression maps !

One day it is yes, then next day it is no ! very strange

If there is not expression Maps there is no Dorico for me !

  • With deference, Bill, it is inattention.  I've been reading Mr. Spreadbury's blog and trying to keep up on the issue in other ways, but my definite impression, FWIW, is that he has focused with laser-like intensity on the beauty of his printed output.  Good.  For those who wish to compose with the structural benefit of a printed score accompanied by a broad pallet of sounds, it seems, again from afar, to be a case of sound output taking a very definite back seat, with little real integration of the Spreadbury team with sound wizards at Cubase.  "Oh talk to them about that," he seems to be saying.

I hope I am wrong about this.  If I am not, it will mean a total defeat of Spreadbury's cherished goal of a program that is an instrument of composition rather than an impediment; reference here his many comparisons to the way "Program A" impedes the compositional process.  I can easily see users of his new program wrestling with an audio output, "left to another committee."  It's an understandable result, if true, given the circumstances.  Again, I hope I prove to be wrong about this.

    Steve

  • It is said now the Expression Maps will come in a future version :( :( :(

The expression map support is something that we hope to provide very soon. Our expression map will be an extension of Cubase's format, so that if you already have your own maps then you should be able to import them, which will get you most of the way there. However there's some extra data that we'll be able to store in there to give more control over playback. Also Dorico's data model is very different to Cubase in that it's more about Players and their Instruments, and the Playing Techniques they use, which can be mapped on to one or more devices. Eg consider if you had a violin patch that you used, but you preferred the pizz sounds from a different library. That's the kind of thing you'll be able to do.
