  • Stems in MIR

    Hello, I'm demoing MIR24 and I wonder how people handle stem delivery for TV (mostly what I do), assuming mixing engineers probably have some sort of algorithmic reverb but nothing like the spatialization features of MIR. I'm learning to use MIR as a DAW plugin, keeping my VEP template fixed so I can try different seatings while still avoiding template load times. Do you just solo the groups in the DAW and bounce away? Thanks.

  • As long as you don't want to separate MIR's wet signals from the (readily positioned) direct signals, just use groups as you would with a real recording or any other kind of signal source. In case you really want separate submixes for wet and dry outputs, you will have to use MIR Pro's "full" version within VE Pro, not the plug-in (i.e. DAW-hosted) version.

  • Thank you. Could you please explain the reason for that? Because in my DAW-based plugin there is a "Dry only" button. Is this "Dry only" = no MIR processing at all, and if so, what option does the VEP version has on top of that?


  • Hi Talino,

    To avoid misunderstandings: The "Dry Solo" button in MIR Pro's Output Channel doesn't bypass the engine entirely, it just mutes the wet signals derived from the chosen Venue's impulse responses. The processing applied to each individual signal by means of the Instrument Icon will remain unchanged - most notably position, stereo width and volume, but also "Character" (a.k.a. pre-EQ) and rotation. Activating "Wet Solo" will mute all dry signals conversely and output the wet signal components only.

    These options _could_ be used for "printing" seperate dry and wet submixes (stems), but this might be cumbersome as you would have to do one bounce after the other. Using MIR Pro within Vienna Ensemble or Vienna Ensemble Pro, you will get the additional "Wet routing" feature for each instance, which allows for comfortable and much more flexible submix options. This feature is not available for the DAW-based plug-in version of MIR Pro, due to the simple fact that no "conventional" DAW permits an inserted plug-in to address routing targets other than the actual track's output.

    ... that said, let me confirm that you _can_ achieve the same results with MIR Pro's plug-in version, it will just take you a bit longer (in some cases considerably longer).

  • Yes, this helps a lot. The Dry Only & Wet Only buttons do what I thought they did, that's reassuring. :) 

    For a, say, three minute piece, bouncing strings, brass, winds & percussion separately through the plugin isn't therefore a big hassle. Just have to run through it four times. With non-real time exports in Cubase this isn't much of an issue for me.

    I know this post is a few years old but I'm in the same situation and I have the VE Pro license on a elicenser connected to the slave computer and MIR Pro on the master machine. I'm about to mix a score for a short film and I would like to send the director the Stems of each instruments' group dry as well as one more Stem with the Reverb only. I mix using Audio tracks. Is there a way now to do this inside Cubase? 


  • As mentioned in my answers above: Once you use MIR Pro in its plug-in version, there is no immediate way to separate dry from wet signals, unless you print two passes, one with "Dry Solo", the second with "Wet Solo" set in the output window.
