  • Sibelius VSL solo voices soundset

I purchased the new VSL solo voices library, but I can't find any Sibelius soundset for it. In fact, I can't find any of the soundsets, which used to be located under needful things. Have the soundsets moved?

I also noticed in my searching that several of the libraries I own are listed on the download page with 2014 release dates. Have these libraries changed significantly? Should I download and reinstall them?

  • Soundsets are in the Notation Related section of MyDownloads in MyVSL.

Dorico, Notion, Sibelius, StudioOne, Cubase, Staffpad VE Pro, Synchon, VI, Kontakt Win11 x64, 64GB RAM, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, August Forster 190
  • Thanks, Bill. I downloaded and installed the soundsets, but apparently the solo voices .xml file has not been added to it yet. Since it was just released, I suppose it might take a bit for it to be included.

  • BUMP: Yes - Really need that soundset as well. It's pretty ugly if you use the ones form Vienna Choir (which is the workaround I've found). It just uses the SUS patch and no Performance Legato...

It's a great shame because the library is fantastic but I only use VSL with Sibelius.

Hope there'll be the resource soon...

  • Hello Randall!

The updated VSL Soundset Installer will be online soon (hopefully later today). It will add Manual Sound Set programs for the Solo Voices and the Vienna Whistler to the "VE Choir" sound set and VI presets.

You don't have to download the content of your libraries again. To update to the latest version of the content, you can use the Library Updates in the MyVSL section.

  • Awesome! Thanks Andi and Happy New Year! I'll test it out this afternoon. Best, Nick

  • Thanks, Andi. Looking forward to working with it.

  • It words very nicely Andi. Thanks for the hard work! Best, Nick

  • Hi Andi,

at myvsl site there is the vsl.0.53 sibelius soundset file, dated 2014-12-23

there is no sign of the update you are talking about for solo voices and wistler.  I tried that file but there was no

change as far as added sound sets for the solo voices.   There is no longer any usable search tool on the site.

Would you please tell me where I can find that updated soundset.

    Thank you

    John

  • Hi again Andi,

even though I had read the update was there a couple of days ago, the package was 1.0.51, not 1.0.53

I downloaded that, but is was unsuccessful to drag it to the directory manager as in the update instructions.

I had to run the installation package, and re-start the computer.  Now the voices are in the vienna choir list.

It's late, I look forward to trying them tomorrow.   So my experience was as follows: the update does not have a Jan 4, 2015, date. It still has the December 2014 date.  The update cannot be installed as to the instructions in the myVSL site, and the computer needs to be restarted.

Sorry for the double spacing, I have no idea why the format is coming out this way.

    John

  • Hello John!

I'm glad that you suceeded in installing the VSL sound sets. Here are some explanations for what seemed to you like wrong guidelines.
    - Version 1.0.53 of the VSL Soundset Installer was built on December 23rd, but was released on January 2nd.
    - The instructions you are mentioning are for the Library updates. The VSL Soundset Installer is an installer and no Library updated. It doesn't have to be dragged onto the Directory Manager, but it has to be run.
    - Normally the VSL Soundset Installer doesn't need a restart of the computer. It needs a restart of Sibelius though.

Have fun with the Solo Voices and the Whistler.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • thanks Andi!

I am having dynamic issues.  The solo voices are extremely soft.  When I play them through the instance keyboard or the score.  I have checked the velocity settings, volume, etc.   All slots and configurations seem ok.  It is almost as if they are muted.  Any advice?

    thanks

    John

  • Andi,

By loading the pre-set solo voices, I am getting a much more substantial sound.  When I loaded the matrix or single patches, it was just about in-audible.

    John

  • Hello John!

I'm not sure which matrices or presets you have loaded. For use with Sibelius, please load the VI presets that have been installed to the Sibelius/Choir 1.1/Solo Voices folder.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi,

Following up on your response to John, am I correct in assuming that the controller for expression should be set to none, and that Velocity X-Fade should use the C11 controller and be "on"? This is what you have advised for sustaining orchestral instruments.

    Randall

  • Hi Randall!

I personally would use the Solo Voices without Velocity X-Fade and only turn it on temporarily with a MIDI command, when I need it. That's why the VI presets are saved with Velocity X-Fade turned off. CC11 is already assigned to Velocity X-Fade and CC12 is assigned to Expression. You can leave it like that regardless if you want to use Velocity X-Fade or not.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

    Your response leaves me confused.

"I personally would use the Solo Voices without Velocity X-Fade and only turn it on temporarily with a MIDI command, when I need it. I just freshly loaded the Soprano solo voice preset, and the Velocity X-Fade is assigned to CC2 and Expression to CC11. Assigning CC11 to Expression is the norm for Sibelius, so I don't know if the preset was adjusted for Sibelius, or if the presets are different from what you stated?

If I load the Choir soprano preset, Expression is assigned to CC11 as well, and Velocity X-Fade is not assigned at all. Do you recommend not using Velocity X-Fade for choir voices as well?

Thanks as always for your help,

    Randall

  • Hello Randall!

It seems to me that you didn't load the VI presets made for Sibelius and the sound sets then. These VI presets can be loaded under PRESET/Sibelius/Choir 1.1.

The choir can be used with and without Velocity X-Fade. If you want to make dynamic transitions in Sibelius, you will need it turned on. It's turned on by default in the afforementioned VI presets.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Andi,

Ah ha!  I hadn't found that folder. Problem solved.

Should I now be loading orchestral instruments from that Sibelius preset folder as my default?  I'm guessing you have set these presets up to work especially well with the Sibelius soundsets.
