  • slurs and vibrato

Hi there, just noticed something. Is this intentional? If I write a simple phrase of alternating notes (D,B,D,B, played 1st position on a violin A string) then repeat identically but adding a slur over the first D and B, and then over the 2nd D&B, the intensity of the vibrato increases, and I think it might be slightly louder. The patches move from sVi (sustained vibrato) for the unslurred notes to pLeg for the slurred notes (Sibelius 7.5, VSL solo strings 1, extended). But all I want to happen when I add a slur is for the two notes to sound as if played in a single bow stroke instead of two, with no change in intensity. Cheers, Rangi.

  • Hello Rangi!

I agree that the legato samples of the Solo Strings have slightly more vibrato than the sustains, but I think that the overall volume is equal. Of course there may be some samples that are louder than others though.

If it's too much vibrato for your taste, you could replace the legato patches with the legato_Vib-progr patches or add these patches to a custom cell. They start with almost no vibrato. The vibrato only gets stronger when you hold the note.

Another way would be staying with the sustain samples by excluding the slur from playback. This can be done by selecting the slur(s) and turning the button Play on pass 1 off in the Sibelius Inspector. Then you could increase the Release time a bit by sending a CC23 command. This can be done with the following Technique text command from Sibelius. ~C23,xx. xx stands fot the value you want to set the Release fader to. Default is 63. An increased value for a pseudo-legato effect would be arround 76.

    Best regards,
    Andi
