  • Hello Errikos

Since I have move to my new studio and upgrade to Mavericks, my test song is issuing pop, crackels.

Working on this yesterday I discovered that one of my Raid 0 of SSD was not working anymore

I have to work more on my problem

    I will report later

    Best

    Cyril

  • Thanks for getting back Cyril,

Since writing my post my computer gave up completely. Suddenly my graphics card gave up (grey screen with slim vertical lines), and yes I know my iMac model has this problem world wide and Apple is replacing graphics cards for free, but mine JUST happened to destroy itself as I upgraded. Coincidence? I don't think so... For the few minutes at a time that my computer works before it freezes, it is excruciatingly slow.

I think Steve Jobs was the one they needed in there with his perfectionist whip to see things through. They are fast becoming another Vista kind of programming environment. Lazy, incompetent.

I will await your experiences with great anticipation. Good luck!

  • I have found a guity cable esata to sata

  • I am happy for you at least; sadly it doesn't help my situation...

  • I have not replaced it yet, so they my be other problems.

I do not agree with you when you say :

    >They are fast becoming another Vista kind of programming environment. Lazy, incompetent.

If you are not happy with Mavericks you can always go back to ML

Did you check your memory ?

Did you check your disks ?

    Did you repair permissions ?

Did you look at the memory usage ? is the swap used ?

  • Sprry to hear that...

But really? I hear it is an absolute bitch to revert to Lion (which was my OS until a few days ago, and the OS that was originally installed in my computer by Apple). I have done all the checks you mentioned except the 'swap' thing which I don't know what it is. From what I read on the Internet though it sounds like a utility which kicks in when the computer is struggling for RAM. I didn't attempt to do anything near intensive, I just tried to open programs like Safari or change accounts, and the lag was scary, and has become scarier since.

I do believe since Jobs' serious illness, withdrawal, and ultimate demise that Apple is becoming another Microsoft slowly. Even if he had approved some of the moves Apple has made recently, I believe his sound judgement and certainly the austerity that resulted in the wonderful products we knew, was gone.

Apple had no business creating ML after Lion - and certainly not Mavericks (Mavericks?!?!? Really?!?! what happened to continuing with the big cats, like Sabertooth!), unless it was for the purpose of making a giant iPhone out of our desktops and towers. Maps?!?! Notifications?!?!?!? Game Centre and iBooks?!?!?!?!? Yeah, really useful stuff for anybody other than a metrosexual mid-management worker and his laptop, and fashion conscious girls who just have to tweet through a smart-phone. Huge amounts of people are complaining about Mavericks in the Apple forum, it's just that I was stupid enough not to have checked it before I upgraded in order to use the new Logic - which by the way, why shouldn't it run on Lion as well?

  • Mavericks is a piece of shit Eric. Do as Cyril suggests and get Mountain Lion in there. And think yourself lucky you don't have a Fusion Drive. Another piece of crap.

Upgrade to Logic X and let me know how you find it.

  • My beautiful iMac i7 3.4 - which I specifically bought before Apple brought out the new abominations without the separate IDE and flash, but with fusion drives instead, and with no DVD drive - came with Lion installed. Now Mavericks has cleaned out Lion completely, and the meagre €2,500 I spent on this computer (including €170 I paid Crucial for RAM), wasn't enough for Apple apparently to send the machine to me with a ******* DVD of the OS in it.

Now it\s not that I really mind buying ML for €15, but I don't know what it will take to force feed it to this Mavericks tainted machine. I read that a requirement for ML is that the computer already has Lion on it. Apple and the Mavericks upgrade have left me with few options!... As if it would be too much trouble for THEM to leave some flexibility in all this, and let US decide whether and when to upgrade, after we have gotten the Mavericks sour taste, it hasn't occurred to them we might want to revert...  - and of course miss out on important features like Maps, Notifications, iMessages etc.......

By the way, did Budleigh survive the torrential deluges of late?

  • You run your song,

You can send me screen copy of the Activity monitor (cpu memory and disk) at : cb dot pub at numericable dot com so I look at them

You can make your own DVD.

    What I will do

Split your disk into a second partition

Instal ML and Logic on it

    And do some tests

  • Thanks Cyril, I may take you up on that, once Apple replaces the faulty graphics card, for only mentalists can work on my system now...

Not really. Part of the cliff collapsed on the Jurasic coastline at Budleigh. And Thurlestone had the same issues. I was in Thurlestone all day today and the coastal erosion is all too apparent.

The new iMacs should have all been recalled, but that would affect Apples share price, so they just deny there's a problem.

That said, looking forward to getting an iMac one day once I'm confident like a lot of other people. A lot of people I see around the music forums are saying more or less the same thing.

  • Good new my Macpro is back and running smothely with Maverick.

    My Macpro had two problems taking ages to boot and playing a lot of pops crackels ;

    - I had a faulty cable on one of my Sata III raid 0 of ssd and those d... sata plug does not stay in place

    - The Wifi was on.

Playing my test song in 5.1 with buffer in Logic set to 512, the CPU is idle between 60 to 85 %, my big template is set with preload buffer at the minimum

I still have a little problem, there is 3 or 4 pops on that 26 minute piece.

I have noticed in Logic only core 1 and 12 are playing

If I reduce the buffer to 64 in Logic, the Idle is still  between 60 to 85 %, but I only get crackles

I have seen that there is a new parameter in MIR : the impulse buffer that is a 3 GB, should I increase it ?

Why do I still have those pops if I still have 60 % idle

Is there is a utility that show acurely the load on each core ?

    Best

    Cyril

  • @Cyril: Good to see that everything is working for you Cyril. I just had my local Apple reseller change my faulty graphics card, now I am emptying my hard drive, reformatting it, and will try and run ML for a while.

@Paul: Sorry to hear that Paul, but glad you're alright.

You do not need to reformat, you create a partition to install ML

I still have those 4 pops, I have post at  I hope they have an idea of what is happening

  • I just got my iMac back with ML installed, I will keep anyone interested here posted on how it compares with Lion and Mavericks.

  • When I bought my big iMac (27 inch 3.4ghz) it developed a rather obnoxious blue line down the centre of the screen. I took a pic with my phone and then took it into the shop where I bought it .. they replaced the whole screen. Apparently this had been a known problem with the iMacs but apple will replace it without any arguement.

Ever since then that computer has been great. It's a mid 2011 model .. and I own three of them. One was a swap for my 17inch MacBook Pro which i toasted, and the other was ex-demo from my local drug store so I got another 27 inch iMac about $500 cheaper than it should have been :D

Anyways, as I say, apple are usually pretty good about replacing bum parts. As for Mavericks .. I like it, I can't say I see any huge performance boost over previous OS's but that may be because I've used it for a while so I've gotten used to it. I do appreciate it's networking and in order to maintain a good connection between my Mac's I upgraded all my machines to Mavericks. Also it gave my the excuse to dump Logic 9, and Pro-Tools 10.

High end iMacs are actually surprisingly powerful computers .. I can't say they'd be as powerful as a previous gen. Mac Pro but I'd bet they'd give 'em a run for their money. I'm still waiting for delivery of my brand new shiny Mac Pro (3.5ghz 6-core). But here's a nice thing I found out .. using the thunderbolt connection you can use the 27inch iMac as a display for the Mac Pro, and it works as fast and well as plugging it into a standalone 27inch cinema display .. so that's pretty cool. So I already have 2 x 27 inch screens for my Mac Pro to use. That's very nice as it saves me spending another $1,000 on screens for it.

Jusr wish it would hurry up and get here!!! ::taps foot::

  • When I installed Mavericks my computer's speed went down on a parabolic slump in terms of speed, and I am not talking professional applications, I am talking opening Safari, lag in responding when clicking on an Apple menu item, changing from account to account, etc., without me having done anything else. I read in several fora that this could be the case because of a program that might conflict with the OS and other CRAP. I have been working with Macs since 1988 and this is the very first OS - and without shifting the paradigm, i.e. not going from 9.2 to X - is so "sensitive" to the user's hard drive's contents.

    1) Apple should have stipulated that users empty and re-format their computer before installing due to the real danger that Mavericks could turn it into jelly.

    2) They should rescind their cretinous and so greedy recent practice of not including the OS CD in the packaging of a $2,500 computer, since in the event of upgrading to a different OS it is a real inconvenience to revert to the older one.

I installed Mountain Lion recently after re-formatting the computer, I will give my thoughts once I get some experience in working with it, already it seems slower than Lion.

  • Why dont you do what I have proposed :

Make one partition with Maverick and another with ML

    Install Logic on both partitions

Dont forget to update all software

    and do comparaision

From what I have read Logic is said to be working faster with Mavericks

    -----

I have gave you the link to make your CD

  • Cyril thank you for monitoring this and sending me the link last week or so. However, I took my iMac at the shop so I could have my faulty graphics card replaced, so I asked them to also install Mountain Lion on my computer. I got it back and erased my hard drive completely so that I could erase the dummy account they had created, and start fresh. Only to my astonishment my computer cannot find my hard drive anymore, it can only see the partition with the operating system on it. I found out yet another reason why Jobs was a one-man-show genius:

Those universal twirps at Apple won't let me install ML again from the Internet because they can't associate my computer with either a Lion or ML in the App store (although I registered my computer promptly when I got it with Lion on it). And my question is: How ******* hard is it to include an OS DVD in the package, and why oh why does the system itself ERASE the installer automatically after the installation??!! Which is why I cannot use your wonderful link, for which I have to have the installer in order to create the bootable DVD. I presume the whole OS 10.8.5 is still intact in my OS partition which I can still see on my system. I just have no access to it. So Monday will be yet another wasted day of my driving down to the authorized service, screaming!
