  • No polyphony in VI

I'm still learning to walk on my VSL legs here, but I'm having a pretty obnoxious problem that's putting a stopper on all my projects; hoping someone can shed some light on this real quick.

I'm having a problem where Vienna Instruments will not play more than one simultaneous note per instrument. I'm not maxing out on polyphony or CPU; right now I am in a sessions with only six instruments, and I'm having that problem. I can hear it play the first note (if it comes first) and then jump up to the second note when the first one should have been sustained and I should have heard two pitches at once. My workaround for now has been to duplicate tracks until all my voices have been covered by the same instrument on different tracks, which is a pain.

Forgive me if there is a simple solution to this; I feel like I am missing some kind of setting somewhere, but I'm wasting a lot of time guessing where that might be.

  • A little more detail.. it doesn't seem to effect all instruments in a project, though I don't see any pattern. In one particular project, I remember the piano played the notes as it should, and then as the project got bigger, it just stopped doing polyphony all of a sudden. Again, I thought it might be polyphony overload, but when I checked the number of voices in VI I had plenty of room.

  • It sounds to me as if you are using a legato patch, which by its nature is polyphonic. Please confirm what patch you're using, so that I can think of other suggestions, if this is not the case.

  • Ah, I see now.  I was using the legato patch.  I'm using the non-p sustain patch now and it's playing chords just fine.  Seems like a weird thing for a patch not to be able to do though.. Thanks for bringing this up.

If you want to get polyphonic legato, I think you need to get VI Pro. Personally I never use polyphonic legato, because the whole point of polyphony is that each part has its own phrasing, but I can see if it is more of a pad feel that you are going for, it would save changing patches.

    Hi,

    @ DG: for chiming in!!

@klh93430: I´d say, check out the free demo license of VI PRO (click "try") and see how that works for you!

    Best,
