  • Need help deciding which pc as slave for mir pro

    Hello all, I would be really thankfull if someone with mir pro experience could me out. I am thinking of buying a slave pc to run mir pro for full orchestra. My budget is pretty limited, so i wanted to ask which of these cpus would performe better under this circumstances. i7 4770 or 2x e5520 xeon. Both with 24gb of ram. I know, not the newest or best cpus on the market, but i thought maybe its enough. My other specs are: main daw mac pro early 2008 8 core 3ghz with 16gb ram on logic pro 9 Thanks for your help! ;)

  • ok, the i7 4770 is actually a pretty new cpu. but still ... what config would perform better with mir pro? 8 threads 3,4ghz or 16 threads 2,26 ghz

  • a double Xeon is mandatory for a large orchestra, especially if you are going to output in 5.1


  • MIR Pro works great with many "average" modern i7-based machines. During a recent test I had almost 50 Icons on MIR stage while mixing in 5.0 (i.e. surround without LFE) @ 44.1 kHz. ASIO- and MIR's own latency were set to 1024 samples. That left plenty of resources to run Nuendo on the same machine (i7 3930K @ 3.2 GHz with 32 GB RAM).

    I can run over 130 Icons on the samy system when I work in stereo.

  • My test configuration was with 100 icons on MIR stage with all Levell II patches loaded in 5.1 and in 7.1  including a few audio channels 

    Quite a complex score with all temolos made with notes [;)] (From the New world of Anton Dvorak)

    It really depends on the complexity of your score, how big and how fast are the tuti 

    If you are thingink to write complex and fast score for a large orchestra and you can afford a double Xeon with 64 GB of Ram and a raid of SSD, you will not regret it !

    VSL need a lot of resources, specially with MIR in 5.1 or 7.1


  • No doubt about that, but the original question of this thread was about a considerably prized second system, if I'm not mistaken - and you can get great results from MIR Pro on much more modest machines than Dual Xeons. ;-)

  • Big THX to you both! And yes, the question was about a considerably prized slave. The only affordable xeon system would be a used dual xeon e5520 (not the newest system), which would cost as much as a new i7 4770k system. And I was wondering, if maybe the xeon architecture fits the way mir pro is working beter. Because its the chipset recommended from the vsl mir system specs page. On the other side, the "vsl approved" (audionetworx) systems also use the i7 4770k and the much, much more expensive new xeons. But as things look right now, it seems for me, that the i7 would be better choice. Because I think (after lookiong at some different benchmarks and dietz´s expirience) that the newer i7 outperformes the older e5520. Yes, it has 8 threads less, but it is much higher clocked. To make things short, after 3 days of intensive internet research, I am still totally confused. But again, THANK YOU GUYS!

    I am not surprized that you are totally confused.

    What is VERY important is disk I/O too, you NEED a SSD or a raid of SSD for large orchestra


  • Really? Also if i am streaming the vsl library samples on my master? (because that one has a ssd) Or are the impulseresponses that big so they won´t fit into 24 or 32gb of ram?

  • SSDs are great, but MIR Pro itself hardly benefits from them.

  • Oh, i also made a mistake. Audionetworx recommends the i7 3930k (which is your cpu, dietz) and that one has 4 threads more than the i7 4770k. ;(

  • Sorry to bother you again, but do you have an idea, from what mir pro would profit more. clock of cpu or number of cores? i mean, i am working with logic 9 and am therefore seeing lots of unused cores, whreeas on is always nearly burning. could you maybe tell me, if mir pro is using all cores (also virtual ones) equally? Thanks again!

  • Logic is pretty much the only recent audio application which shows this - uhm - somewhat peculiar behaviour (AFAIK). ;-)

    IOW: Yes, MIR Pro will use as many threads as you assign in its Preferences.

  • ... and to answer your question: MIR will benefit from raw processing power (the highest possible speed an as many cores as possible) AND (!) from fast RAM. Lots of data to compute ...

    Hi Dietz,

    Are you actually playing in midi data while MIR Pro and your ASIO buffers are set to 1024 ?  or are you using ASIO & MIR Pro at 1024 after you have your project recorded at a lower buffer, and then using MIR Pro & ASIO (at 1024) to place the instruments into the MIR Pro stage ? 

    I'm asking this, because I find it uncomfortable/odd to perform, or record in real time while ASIO buffer is set at 1024. 

    Your feedback on this important detail would be very helpful.

     Mir pro may not need SSD but VE PRO DOES need it ! As MIR need VE PRO !

    Otherwise you will have to wait 1/2 hour to load a 100 instrument template and you will need to have a lot of memory

    Havind ssd you will reduce the preload buffer size, needing less memory, avoiding to swap !


  • As for the ssds... yeah, but ... in the meantime i can take a cup of coffee in the morning. and i don´t want to load 2 stages at the same time, so i guess i can wait until all the responses are loaded. (if one room is less then 32gb of ram???) @dietz: haha ... you just bootet me me kind of back to basis line. But this still helps. As I see it now ... trying to add 1 and 1 ... this means 8 times 3.5ghz (i7 4770k) is nice but 16 times 2,26/2.53(tb) is nicer. Thanks a lot guys!!! ;)

  • I am interested too. Because I know that playing the midi- keyboard at a buffer size at 1024 doesn´t "REALLY" work. But I got used to play with a latency of 512 buffers. Again, BIG THANKS for sharing your expierience!!

  • Don't forget that you can always bypass MIR Pro inside VE Pro on one selected channel for playing an instrument live, putting it back on stage afterwards (or just for listening back). That way, you can have MIR Pro using large latencies without experiencing lagging notes while playing on your keyboard. It's just one mouseclick ...

  • I just wanted to keep you updated. After all your tips! ;) Finally I decided that the i7 4930k would be the best choice. The whole thing is a little bit more expensive, but I thought, what the heck! ;) So once again ... A Big thanks to you Guys!!
