  • MIDI keyboard input and latency issues in Sibelius

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a pleasant holiday.

I have recently transferred to a new machine, and I'm having two issues in Sibelius that I can't seem to resolve by myself. Neither of these were problems on my previous machine, which was significantly less powerful, and I'm pretty sure there must be something silly that I'm overlooking.

    1. I'm having trouble getting VE Pro (server mode) to recognize input from my MIDI keyboard while Sibelius is open. It plays back MIDI input from the keyboard while in standalone mode, but not within Sibelius. The keyboard is configured as a MIDI input device in the Sibelius preferences, and Sibelius is properly receiving input when I click on a staff and press the keyboard. VE Pro plays sounds when I play back a Sibelius score, and also when I click on the VI Pro keyboard within VE Pro, so Sibelius and VE are definitely communicating. I just can't get VE to play anything when I press my MIDI keyboard.

    2. Although pressing the VI Pro keyboard within VE Pro produces sound, there is a significant delay (about 500 ms) between input and playback. This is not the case in standalone mode, where there is no recognizable latency at all. The MIR Pro engine latency is set to 512 by default, but it doesn't seem to make any difference even when I set the latency to 0. The settings in Sibelius and VE Pro are the same as those from my old machine, and there was very little latency in the old machine when only a few instruments were loaded. The new machine is rather powerful, so I would like to be able to play and record in real time with very little latency within Sibelius, if possible.

Any suggestions as to what I'm overlooking would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Brian

  • Hello Brian!

If you have big latency with Sibelius, I guess you have selected the wrong audio driver. The audio driver in Sibelius can be selected in the Audio Engine Options menu.

I hope this helps with both of your problems.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

    Thank you for your reply.

This completely fixed problem # 2. I selected the correct audio driver, and now there is no latency at all.

Unfortunately, problem # 1 persists. I'm still not able to get VE Pro to recognize my MIDI keyboard input. Do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Hello Brian!

I guess this is a MIDI Thru setting in Sibelius that must be set up then. Please check your according settings in the Sibelius/Preferences/Input Devices menu.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Andi,

That was it! I just needed to tick the Midi Thru box on the Input Devices page. I've now got midi input from my keyboard, and with practically no latency at all.

    Thank you!

    Brian
